I Want A Little Girl
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want a little girl, call my own.
She must be someone who's all alone now.
Say, I want a little girl to fall in love with me, oh yeah.

I want a little girl, but she may not look
Just like a picture in a story book.
If she can cook chicken, yeah, she'll suit me to a T.
And she don't have to wave her hair
Or even wear fancy clothes, I wouldn't even care.
She don't wear nylon hose, oh.

I want a little girl to love a lot.

You know that I'd give her everything I got.
I want a little girl to fall in love with me.

Overall Meaning

In the song "I Want A Little Girl," Ray Charles expresses his desire for a companion - a little girl - to call his own. He emphasizes that the girl he wants must be someone who is all alone, hinting that he wants someone who is not already committed to another person. Although he says that she may not look like a picture in a storybook, he does have some specific preferences, such as the ability to cook chicken. Yet, he also simplifies his needs, saying that she doesn't need to have fancy clothes or wear nylon hose.

Not sure Ray Charles has ever recorded a bad song! His voice and musicianship are legend. I see where EC got his arrangement from for this song. I listened to all versions, and this one is where EC went to get the vocal nuance and arrangement from.

I did had the same impression after listening this song on the Reptile album, 20 years ago. I instantly recognized the Ray Charles "style". But on the pocket of the album, i could read "Murray Mencher, Billy Moll" as the authors of the song. Today (september 2022) while revisiting this album, I decided to get to the bottom of it. And then I landed to this video.

Any "bad" songs became "good or very good" when Ray sang them.

This song was written in 1930 by the duo Murry Mencher and Billy Moll. I suspect when science finally confirms the area(s) of the brain responsible for the emotion of LOVE (currently thought to involve the Ventral Tagemental and the Caudate Nuclei), they will discover, genetically encoded therein, the music and lyrics to this song.

My folks sang this song in the Minstrel Show back in the early70's. The song was originally from 1937. A beautiful song, from a beautiful Era!!!

I first heard and saw Ray Charles at a jazz concert at New York's Carnegie Hall in the late '50s. Also on the show were other musicians like trumpeter Chet Baker and saxophonist Gerry Mulligan with their bands. Ray sang and played piano solo. He stole the show!A few days later I found "I Want a Little Girl" on a juke box, and loved it! It was the first of his records I bought. Subsequently I found other songs like "What'd I Say" and "Sticks and Stones". I have remained a Ray Charles fan ever since, and a fan of other r&b greats like Hank Ballard, James Brown and Junior Walker. :)
