Mr. Charles Blues
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, we went last winter
And the ground was covered with snow
Yes, we went last winter, baby
And the ground was covered with snow

I didn't have no money in my pocket, darling
Shout aloud and have no place to go
Well, it seems like I was going crazy sometime
I didn't know what to do
Yes, it seems like I was going crazy sometime
Baby, I didn't know what to do

Yeah, I wake up in the morning
Shout and laid down with the blues

Well, I finally got a break, baby
Easy things are coming my way
Yeah, I finally got a break, baby
Easy things are coming my way

I've got money in my pocket, darling
Yes, I can change clothes everyday

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ray Charles Blues describe a difficult period in the singer's life when he was broke and feeling lost without any direction. The winter season and the snow-covered ground serve as a metaphor for his bleak situation, emphasizing the coldness and emptiness he was experiencing. The repetition of the phrase "shout aloud and have no place to go" highlights his frustration and desperation, as he struggled to find a way out of his predicament.

The second stanza offers a glimpse into his mental state during this time, as he admits to feeling like he was going crazy and not knowing what to do. His feelings of despair are further illustrated in the line "wake up in the morning, shout and laid down with the blues", indicating that his troubles were consuming him both day and night.

However, the mood shifts in the final stanza as he sings about finally catching a break and experiencing some much-needed good fortune. He now has money in his pocket and can change clothes every day, highlighting the contrast from his previous struggles. These lyrics ultimately illustrate the ups and downs of life and the hope that things can get better even in the midst of difficult times.

This is an outstanding example of Ray's talent...this tune has a rather undistinguished title, but it really cooks!  It is a vocal (most of these type titles are instrumental).

Douglas Curry

This is a remake of T-bone Walker's "I Got A Break Baby."

+Douglas Curry I have not heard T-Bone's tune...but the title is very apt for that (Ray did 'steal' a lot of gospel tunes, which he re-worded & re-titled...so, no big surprise!

@red martin tbf this album was released using stuff from The Atlantic vaults so its possible the record company just came up with the name with no involvement from Ray
