No One To Cry To
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(I need someone to say I do)
No one to cry to now, no one to say goodnight
No one to tell my troubles to
I've got no one, to sigh to, no one to hold me

Tight
No one to chear me when I'm blue
When I go home to my lonely room
And find there's no one there

And each night I think of you, so please answer this
One prayer
And you'll need someone, I said to cry to
Someone to say I do

Someone to whisper I love you
When I go home to my lonely room
And find there's no one there
And each night I think of you, so please answer this

One prayer
And you'll need someone, I said to cry to

Someone to say I do
Someone to whisper I love you

Overall Meaning

In Ray Charles's song "No One To Cry To," the lyrics express the singer's intense feelings of loneliness and the desperate need for someone to fill the emptiness in his life. The first line, "I need someone to say I do," sets the tone for the entire song. It is a plea for love and companionship that is absent from the singer's life. He has no one to talk to about his troubles, no one to share his sadness with, and no one to hold him tight when he needs it the most. The second line, "No one to cry to now, no one to say goodnight," reinforces the sense of loneliness and isolation that the singer is experiencing.

As the song progresses, the lyrics continue to highlight the singer's profound desire for love and companionship. The third line, "I've got no one to sigh to, no one to hold me tight," emphasizes the singer's frustration and deep sense of emptiness. He is lost without someone to love him and hold him during his darkest moments. The fourth line, "No one to cheer me when I'm blue," further emphasizes the singer's need for emotional support and encouragement, which he is currently lacking.

The chorus of the song is a plea for someone to fill the emptiness in the singer's life. He asks for someone to cry to, someone to say I do, and someone to whisper I love you. These are all things that the singer desperately needs to feel complete and whole. The final lines of the song, "And each night I think of you, so please answer this one prayer," show that the singer is actively seeking out love and companionship, hoping that someone will come into his life and fill the void that he is feeling.

Frankly, this is my favorite version of my late husband's song. Foy used to refer to it as the "little song" he wrote. Turns out that it isn't so little, as it is still garnering royalties. Other artists that recorded NOTCT which I don't often see are: Marty Robbins, Andy Williams, Paul Williams, Michael Parks, Slim Whitman and The Three Suns.

Connie Francis is probably the original of this song rec 9th Feb 1959 [master take 6]and rel on the ROCKSIDES 2 LP ALBUM IN Nov 1987.

@waynebrasler

An amazing number of prominent artists recorded this side, including Ray Charles, Jim Reeves, Patti Page, Dottie West and Connie Francis. The Connie Francis recording originally was bypassed for single release and, in fact, some of her best recordings were passed by, only to appear later in anthologies.

Connie Francis rec 9th February 1959 [take 6]. released November 1987 on ROCKSIDES . So who is the original artist to record this?

@stevehoffman9735

Recorded at Bell Sound Studios, NYC on the big four-track machine. Great sound!

@TonyGPizza

He probably did this too fast for the sad mood of the song, although his vocal is spot on. He did so many of these country-soul sad songs in the 60s
