You Win Again
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(What can I do)
(You win again)

The news is out
All over town
That you've been seen
Just a running 'round
I know that I
Should leave, but then
I just can't go
You win again

This heart of mine
Could never see
What everybody knew about me

Just trustin' you
Was my great sin
What can I do
You win again, yes

(What can I do)
(You win again)

I'm sorry for
Your victim now
'Cause soon, his head
Like mine will bow

He'll give his heart
But all in vain
And some day say
You win again

You have no heart
You have no shame
You take true love
And give the blame

I'll guess that I
Should not complain
I love you still
Well, you win again

I love you still
You win again

Win again

Overall Meaning

In Ray Charles classic blues song, You Win Again, he laments about a lover who has betrayed his trust and hurt him repeatedly, yet he finds himself unable to leave her. The news of her infidelity is all over town and he knows he should leave, but he can't bring himself to do it. Ray Charles painfully acknowledges his heart's inability to see what everyone else could see all along about his lover's deceitful ways. His inability to leave her despite her betrayal of trust is acknowledged when he sings, "Just trustin' you was my great sin". He is almost apologetic to the next victim of her treachery for falling for her charms, "I'm sorry for your victim now 'cause soon, his head like mine will bow".

He further laments about how his lover has no heart and no shame, as she takes true love and turns it into the blame for her actions. He concludes by saying that he still loves her despite her transgressions, and as always, she has won again.

Amen.

My favorite version this song . Hank Williams version was very special indeed. I love Jerry Lee's version bc it has such a raw gritty feel to it. But Ray's interpretation of this classic is a true masterpiece.
