Lola
Ray Davies feat. Paloma Faith Lyrics

Lola
I met her in a club down in old Soho,
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola,
C-O-L-A cola,
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance,
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola,
L-O-L-A Lola la-la-la-la Lola
Well I'm not the world's most physical guy,
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine,
Oh my Lola la-la-la-la Lola.

Well I'm not dumb but I can't understand,
Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man,

Well we drank champagne and danced all night,
Under electric candlelight,
She picked me up and sat me on her knee,
And said dear boy won't you come home with me,

Well I'm not the world's most passionate guy,
But when I looked in her eyes well I almost fell for my Lola,

I pushed her away,
I walked to the door,
I fell to the floor,
I got down on my knees,
Then I looked at her and she at me,
Well that's the way that I want it to stay,
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola.

Well I left home just a week before,
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before,
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand,
And said dear boy I'm gonna make you a man.

Girls will be boys and boys will be girls,
It's a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for Lola,

Overall Meaning

The song "Lola" by Ray Davies feat. Paloma Faith is about a man who meets a transgender woman named Lola at a club in Soho. The man is initially attracted to Lola and they dance and drink champagne together. However, as the night goes on, the man begins to feel confused about his attraction to someone who looks like a woman but talks like a man. He ultimately decides to push Lola away and leave the club. Despite this, he realizes that he will always have a special place in his heart for Lola.

The lyrics of this song can be seen as a commentary on gender identity and sexuality. By featuring a transgender character, Davies and Faith challenge traditional notions of what it means to be a man or a woman. The lyrics also highlight the idea that love and attraction are not always easy to define, and that sometimes people are drawn to others who don't fit conventional gender roles. In this way, "Lola" can be seen as a celebration of diversity and nonconformity.

One of my all time favourite tunes, that I've heard covered many times. This sits firmly alongside Madness' version as being BRILLIANT! Such an uplifting, fun song, Paloma as a breath of fresh air. I love how she perfoms.

I think Ray is having a total blast!! You can clearly see that by the smile on his face! The guy is a pro and has preformed with hundreds of huge artists....anybody who thinks Paloma should of "toned down" her act is wrong. Ray is clearly having a great time and you can't help but see that she is!
