You've Changed
Ray Ellis & Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You've changed
That sparkle in your eyes is gone
Your smile is just a careless yawn
You're breaking my heart
You've changed

You've changed
Your kisses now are so blase
You're bored with me in every way
I can't understand
You've changed

You've forgotten the words, I love you
Each memory that we've shared
You ignore every star above you
I can't realize you've ever cared

You've changed
You're not the angel I once knew
No need to tell me that we're through
It's all over now
You've changed

You've forgotten the words, I love you
Each memory that we've shared
You ignore every star above you
I can't realize you've ever cared

You've changed
You're not the angel I once knew
No need to tell me that we're through
It's all over now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ray Ellis & Orchestra's song "You’ve Changed" is a hauntingly beautiful portrayal of lost love and changing emotions. The first stanza of the song marks regret when the singer notices a change in their loved one's expression. The "sparkle in your eyes is gone," and "Your smile is just a careless yawn." This change, of course, is troubling and "breaking my heart." In the second stanza, the singer describes how "Your kisses now are so blasé” and "You're bored with me in every way." The singer can't understand or comprehend the sudden transformation in their lover's behavior.

In the chorus, the singer emphasizes the stark difference between the present and the past. The lover has “changed" so much that they have even forgotten the words "I Love You” and ignore the stars above them. The lyrics, “I can't realize you've ever cared,” adds an element of disbelief and heartbreak. The final stanza, the singer acknowledges the truth when they say “You're not the angel I once knew/No need to tell me that we're through/It's all over now /You've changed." The lyrics allude to the fact that the love is gone, and it’s useless to hold on anymore.

At the end of her life, off of this magnificent LP, she delivers what are, for me, the definitive versions of "You Don't Know What Love Is," "Don't Explain," and this tune.
The instrument (her voice) is almost entirely gone;  the taste and musicianship remain unsurpassed.
