I was at this recording and I have to say those 'ladies' were drinking a lot of white wine and making people feel uncomfortable considering it was mid afternoon. They had been talking to each other and at the guests from the get go (this was the second of two podcasts recorded that day). I was sitting six rows back and even I could hear them. They created an unpleasant atmosphere and Ray dealt with them brilliantly.

Ray Peacock. Lovely man. He was once asked by an ex girlfriend (Bekka) of mine about 5 or 6 years ago to play a gig at her memorial in Birmingham after she'd died of cancer. It was one of her wishes after she'd gone. And he did. I'll say it again, lovely man. Now that I live in Edinburgh, I try to go see him when he's here. As I do with Richard.

This remains one of the finest examples of dealing with a heckler I have ever seen. Engaging, consise, softly spoken, empathetic, just the right amount of taking the piss and uses it as a springboard for the wider discussion of entitlement culture. This should honestly be shown in sociology classes as an example of problem solving through conversation.

Ahh. That was really amazing to watch. I'm so glad he pointed out the x-factor condition too. As this has occurred to me many times doing gigs with various bands over the years.

One specific one which springs to mind, was a very drunk, older woman, who came up to us as we were setting up sound (poor organising from the venue, not our fault) grabbed my attention and yelled 'I'm boooorrrred' like I was supposed to dangle some keys and inject some sort of mystery and intrigue into her peripheral vision. It was unusual on a lot of levels.

First, we hadn't played yet, she had no idea what we sounded like, whether we were shite or incredible, second, she was very convicted in the way she presented this information to me, almost as though, she was a judge on a popular tv show. Third, who cares? Really, what? What is that sense of entitlement where people feel the urge to be that vocal and dismissive to those around them? We bothered to learn a craft, and form it into something that can be presented on a stage, you just turned up and drank beer all night. It's a bizarre counter-culture and I don't care much for it.

In terms of his depression, and the way he dealt with that unfortunate situation, I thought it was handled and discussed beautifully, he was not rude to her or unkind and actually probably did give her more time than she deserved. Also was very matter of fact about it and very well articulated in a manner that I'm sure will help a lot of people who watch. I've never heard of Ray before, took a punt because I like your podcasts in general, I'll definitely be searching him out, thanks for putting another artist on my radar! Peace :)

This is my first time hearing about Ray. He seems like a genuinely nice guy and I can relate to him hugely.
I wish he had a DVD of his Here Comes Trouble show, I'd really like to see that. Hell, I'd settle for a grainy CCTV tape dubbed with audio from a Dictaphone.

Edit: Seen a few clips of his stand up here on YouTube. I'm a total convert. "Ray", if you happen to see this, you're awesome. Stay strong, we need people like you.
Edit 2: I've now seen everything he has on YouTube and heard every podcast multiple times. He's now one of my favourite people ever.

I hope this proves to be the catalyst that stops people putting up with fellow audience members who won't just sit down, shut up and watch what they have paid to see. It baffles me that people will go to the bother of buying a ticket, make the necessary arrangements to get to the venue but it's a step too far to actually watch the sodding thing.

I've never really paid too much attention to Ray Peacock before, but I came out of this a fan. Seems like a funny, sensitive, thoughtful guy. Unfortunately, in my experience, life is often not kind to people like that. I hope he keeps doing comedy as I'd love to see him live, but mostly I hope he figures out how to be as happy as he can be. Seems like the kind of guy who deserves it.

+Ed Prior Well having had the pleasure of seeing him (and Ed) live and having heard most of if not all of his podcasts I can highly recommend him. Ray would probably be more famoused up but his rise took a nuke to the tits when he not only worked with Raji James who was in Eastenders but ruined it, he allowed him to be in the 2nd and 3rd series of the Ray Peacock podcasts, which was the first time Raji had been recommissioned (possibly the last). People also confuse Ray with Justin Lee Collins which doesn't help his career and also doesn't make any sense, as Ray is 'funny' and has yet to be convicted of harassment, although he (along with Ed) has been banned/thrown out from many attractions e.g. Blackpool Pleasure Beach, The London Dungeons.

Two things here: Hecklers suck, and the brand of Feminism she seems to be espousing is that ANYTHING negative that she perceives happening to her, is happening to her because she's a woman. She can't admit as an individual she was out of line, it was you attacking her whole gender so she doesn't have to take responsibility.

The message to anyone contemplating suicide is that no matter what happens you will feel differently in the future. Better or worse, short-term, long-term, it is 100% certain that you will not feel as you feel right now.

I'd never heard of Ray Peacock before - I don't know much about comedy, partcularly, but am gradually going through Richard Herring's podcasts (the vast majority are fascinating and funny - and I can't cook without them).
This one more so than most (and it seemed a lot more serious if you only have audio - I think it's really good to only listen, because you only judge them on what they're saying then).
Ray Peacock was absolutely spot on with everything he said to and about that woman. Her behaviour was appalling and people who talk at gigs (comedy or music), cinema, theatre, etc. are selfishly ruining for everyone else.
Her desperate and pathetic attempts to claim he was being offensive totally failed - we'd all been listening you moron - and were, as he said, purely an excuse because she was having a strop as he'd told her to be quiet.

Ian Boldsworth (Ray Peacock) is probably my favourite comedian at the moment. 'The Peacock and Gamble Podcast' and 'The Parapod' are genuinely two of the funniest things I've ever listened to. He's also done a very thoughtful podcast on mental health called 'The Mental Podcast' and hosts a podcast on Fubar Radio every Monday that's well worth listening to.

I like The Parapod but I kinda missed the podcast format where you could hear Ray being a bit more honest and upfront and (and unfocused! I love the digressions I just was hoping Ray would talk about star wars all through it but all we got were the muppets aha) so I loved this! For me this one was of the most enjoyable RHLSTPs (and there are a lot of them). I really enjoyed the guest and feel ashamed that I had never seen/heard Ray Peacock's material before - I will definitely be looking more up! I thought they both handled the numpty in the audience very well and the dialogue that evolved from the incident was very interesting and relevant. Great show!

I don't expect a big warning every time that comes on in ASDA but at parties my friends will remove it from playlists. +Richard Herring don't get me wrong I'm still a big fan, but I don't think it should be looked at in terms of views as that isn't the issue at hand and is after the situation. I just feel that he was clearly extremely bothered by her comments to the degree he said it makes him want to slash he's wrists when people do that. he may of handled it with confidence and took her on head on but clearly inside its something that bothers him on a bigger scale then most people, and the things he was saying was clearly asking for help in my opinion. And she completely took over half the podcast with a stupid point. you prob think I'm wrong and I'm not trying to be rude, as I feel your podcasts have helped me through the years.

+zeaga15 I think it's clear that they were grasping at straws, they said he had been offensive and sexist all night yet it took them quite a while to think of one very poor example. What basically happened is the ladies got called out and were embarrassed, instead of just admitting to their mistake they decided to try and start an argument. I'm sure in hindsight they would have just said "yeah sorry" and let the show carry on but in the heat of the moment i bet we have all said something stupid in an argument and taken it too far that we can't just say "I was talking total bollocks."

The most hilarious part for me was how they tried to get "Rich" to back them up and his reaction in clearly not wanting to offend them whilst also totally disagreeing with them was very funny to see.

I'm intrigued by the trigger warning. Stephen Fry also described a suicide attempt and rather than issuing a warning you proudly basked in the publicity, making several jokes about it in many subsequent rhlstp(RHLSTP!)s, so this must be a real humdinger.... I'll strap in.

Edit: Great podcast. I can see how the description of the method is a tricky one, though arguably Fry's 'washed a load of pills down with vodka' anecdote was no less graphic. The PERSON in the audience was a complete idiot, regardless of gender, who believed she could hide behind accusations of sexism and get away with being a selfish, ignorant arse hole. Well done Ray for flagging up her rudeness.

As no stranger to the old Black Dog myself, I think you handled both things (the description and the chatty heckler) very well, but even if I didn't think that, my opinion is neither here nor there, so please don't think I was setting myself up as the arbiter of good taste. For what it's worth Ray's attempt puts Stephen's to shame in terms of originality, and being reprieved by an extractor fan is way funnier than being found by a producer ... I can feel a pitch for a new panel game show forming. "Top That! With Richard Herring". We'll have you back on tele' in no time Mr Rich.

+em diar yes that's partly why it's different. Much more specific methodology. Also Ray makes jokes about the experience and gets laughs out of it, which some people may not like, but which I (as you have noted) actually think is a much healthier way to deal with and help people understand a horrific experience. We had a big discussion about how best to deal with this, with some arguing to remove it and some feeling it should go out unflagged. So in the end this middle ground is, I think, the best way to go. Beauty of podcasts is you can't chance across them by accident so the choice is yours.
