Ray Peterson was born in Denton, Texas. Blessed with a 4-octave singing voice, he idolized the vocal sounds of fellow Texan, Roy Orbison. Peterson moved to Los Angeles, California where he was signed by RCA Victor Records in 1957. He recorded several songs that were minor hits until "The Wonder of You" made it into the Billboard Top Thirty list. The song would later be recorded by Elvis Presley with whom he became close friends.
In 1960 Ray Peterson scored a Top 10 hit with "Tell Laura I Love Her," and followed that success with "Corrina, Corrina, and I Could Have Loved You So Well." By the mid-1960s he had become something of a phenomenon on the west coast of the United States, appearing live in numerous rock concerts with Paul McCartney lookalike, Keith Allison.
His performances at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium, produced by Fred Vail, beginning in 1963 helped fuel a revival of "The Wonder of You" as well as launch his new relationship with MGM Records, an alliance that produced two albums, "The Very Best of Ray Peterson" featuring most of the Dunes singles, and "The Other Side of Ray Peterson", which included many of his nightclub songs. He later moved to Nashville, Tennessee and by the 1970s when the hit records stopped coming, Peterson became a Baptist Church minister and occasionally played the oldies music circuit.
Ray Peterson died of cancer in 2005 in Smyrna, Tennessee and was interred in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens cemetery in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Now THIS is singing! Does anyone know where I can get an MP3 version of his rare single "Let's Try romance"? Please let me know. Ray was a particular favorite of mine in high school. His range was magnificent.

Outstanding vocals, Ray was up there with Jackie Wilson in vocal range.

Got my 'brother Ray' fix today. Can't believe he's been gone for seven years. Listen to the amazing range, the clarity, the perfect pitch. Ray, Elvis, Roy Orbison, Ricky Nelson, Buddy Holly, Ray Charles..they had talent! I was fortunate & blessed to meet them--except Elvis and Buddy--although I did see Elvis live 6 times. Would loved to have told them personally just how much their talent & music meant to me. No Pro Tools vocal tuning here, folks. This is truly God-given talent at it's best.

When this single came on the radio (AM) in '58 or '59, I was blown away by the sheer talent and range. As luck would have it, I booked ray in '63. I was 19 and he was, as they say, "between hits." I added him at the last minute to fill in for Paul Peterson, no relation, who was a teen heart throb and a cast member on the "Donna Reed Show." Ray appeared with Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon, Johnny Burnette, The Coasters, The Rightous Brothers and The Rivingtons, if I recall. Wow. Sept 6, 1963. A KXOA "Good Guys" Back to School Spectacular....oh, what a night, late September back in '63. Oh, I think we sold tickets for $1.75 or $2.00. Sorry you missed the show!
