Walls
Ray Scott Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She said good-bye and it's like she fell right off this earth
Six long nights, I ain't seen hide nor hair of her
And this old Laz-E-Boy, is feelin' like my only friend
There's sunshine shinin' on the world outside, but there ain't none shinin' in

[Chorus]
Startin' now, somehow
I've gotta leave her in my past
Walk this floor right out that door
Before these walls start talkin' back

And I bet the neighbors think either I've skipped town or I've bought the farm
I got my shades pulled down and there's a week's worth of papers in my yard
Hey, what was that, did I just hear somebody call my name
Oh, Lord knows I'm just a few thoughts shy of bein' certified insane

[Chorus: x2]

Overall Meaning

In Ray Scott's song "Walls," the singer is struggling to cope with a recent breakup. His loneliness and despair are powerfully conveyed in the opening lines as he observes that since his partner left, he hasn't seen her nor heard from her. The haunting image of her falling "right off this earth" suggests the depth of his disorientation and loss. The singer's sense of isolation is further compounded by his physical surroundings. Even though there is sunshine outside, metaphorically representing the possibility of hope and happiness, his house is like a prison. The walls are closing in, and he feels trapped and alone.

The chorus of "Walls" suggests that the only way for the singer to move on from his pain is to take action. He must venture beyond the comfort of his La-Z-Boy recliner and the four walls of his home to face the world and leave his painful past behind. The urgency of the imperative is amplified by the contrast between his lonely, dark and gloomy interior with a world outside full of sunshine and happiness. The lyrics convey an effective juxtaposition between the sun-filled world outside and his dark and lifeless world inside, urging him to break out of the shadows and seize hope and light.

One interesting aspect of this song is that it was written exclusively by Ray Scott. Scott has often referred to the song as being one of his personal favorites from his oeuvre. "Walls" was released in 2012 as part of Ray Scott's fifth studio album. The track received mostly positive reviews from critics and was praised for its soulful lyrics that aptly depict the pain and agony of heartbreak. Another interesting fact about this song is that while many of Ray Scott's songs have a country twang to them, "Walls" relies more on rock and roll-inspired rhythms and arrangements, making it a unique departure in his discography.
