Blue Christmas
Ray Stevens (Holiday) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll have a Blue Christmas without you
I'll be so blue just thinking about you
Decorations of red on a green Christmas tree
Won't mean a thing, if you're not here with me

And when those blue snowflakes start fallin'
That's when those blue memories start callin'
You'll be doin' all right, with your Christmas of white,
But I'll have a blue, blue Christmas

I'll have a Blue Christmas that's certain
And when that blue heartache starts hurtin'

You'll be doin' all right, with your Christmas of white,
But I'll have a blue, blue, blu, blue Christmas

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ray Stevens' Holiday song Blue Christmas express the singer's longing for someone who is not present during the holiday season. The "you" in the song is someone who is deeply missed, and the singer is feeling blue just thinking about their absence. The decorations and festivities of the season do not bring the same level of joy or excitement without this person there to share them with. The blue snowflakes also symbolize the sadness and loneliness that the singer feels during this time.

The second verse repeats this idea of the singer having a blue Christmas while the person they miss is likely having a happy white Christmas. The heartache of missing them is so strong that it outweighs all of the cheerful surroundings of the holiday season. The repetition of "blue" emphasizes the depth of this feeling and the lasting impact it has on the singer's experience of the holiday.

I'm truly honored that the king of novelty songs would do a tribute of my Seymour Swine version of "Blue Christmas."  I grew up a Ray Stevens fan, and it's pretty amazing that years later, he would, in a way - return the favor.  Blessings Ray!

I attempt to make it a point to watch Ray's "Blue Christmas" music video each Christmas season and so here I am once again. I also watch and listen to his other Christmas music videos and audio tracks, too, but this one is a personal favorite given how much I love sausage gravy and biscuits. If there's a choice given I always choose sausage over bacon.
