Every Morning
Ray Sugar Lyrics

Every morning there's a halo hangin' from the corner
Of my girlfriend's four-post bed
I know it's not mine but I'll see if I can use it
For the weekend or a one-night stand

Couldn't understand
How to work it out
Once again as predicted, left my broken heart open
And you ripped it out

Something's got me reelin'
Stopped me from believin'
Turn me around again
Said that we can do it
You know I wanna do it again

(Sugar Ray say)
Oh
(Every morning) oh
(Every morning when I wake up)
(Shut the door, baby, don't say a word)
Oh (she always rights the wrong)
Oh (she always rights, she always rights)
(Shut the door, baby, shut the door, baby)

Every morning there's a heartache hanging from the corner
Of my girlfriend's four-post bed
I know it's not mine and I know she thinks she loves me
But I never can believe what she said

Something so deceivin'
When you stop believin'
Turn me around again
Said we couldn't do it
You know I wanna do it again

Oh
(Every morning) oh
(Every morning when I wake up)
(Shut the door, baby, don't say a word)
Oh
(Every morning) oh
(Every morning when I wake up)
(Shut the door, baby, shut the door, baby)

She always rights the wrong
For me, baby
She always rights the wrong
For me

Every morning there's a halo hangin' from the corner
Of my girlfriend's four-post bed
I know it's not mine but I'll see if I can use it
For the weekend or a one-night stand
(Shut the door, baby, don't say a word)

Every morning
Every morning when I wake up
(Shut the door, baby, shut the door, baby)
Every morning
Every morning (turn me around again)
(Shut the door, baby, don't say a word)
Every morning
(Do it again)
Every morning when I wake up
Every morning

(Shut the door, baby, shut the door)
Every morning when I wake up

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of “Every Morning” by Sugar Ray are about a man waking up in his girlfriend’s bed with a hangover, feeling guilty and confused about cheating on her. He notices a halo hanging from the corner of her bed and contemplates using it to cover up his guilt. The chorus talks about his girlfriend always “righting the wrong” and how he wants to do it again with her.

The lyrics show the singer’s guilt and regret for cheating on his girlfriend, but also his desire to continue the affair. The use of religious symbolism through the halo adds an element of irony, as the singer is contemplating using a symbol of purity and goodness to cover up his own bad deeds. The line, “Something’s got me reelin’, stopped me from believin’”, shows that he is struggling with his own actions and doesn’t know how to proceed with the relationship.

Line by Line Meaning

Every morning there's a halo hangin' from the corner
He wakes up each day to find a sense of hope or purity (the halo) present in the bedroom where he and his girlfriend sleep.

Of my girlfriend's four-post bed
These positive feelings are associated with his girlfriend.

I know it's not mine but I'll see if I can use it
Despite recognizing that the optimism he feels isn't necessarily coming from him or his relationship, he still wants to make the most of it while it's there.

For the weekend or a one-night stand
He's not sure how long this hope will last, so he wants to enjoy it as much as he can while it lasts, regardless of the permanence of the connection to his girlfriend.

Couldn't understand
He's confused about the dynamic between himself and his girlfriend and why he can't have more of what he feels when he wakes up each day.

How to work it out
He's struggling to find a solution or way forward from this confusion and frustration.

Once again as predicted, left my broken heart open
He's been hurt before in similar situations, and he's letting himself be vulnerable yet again even though he should have expected the pain that might come with it.

And you ripped it out
Sure enough, he experiences the pain of heartbreak, and it feels as if someone else (his girlfriend, or another partner) is to blame.

Something's got me reelin'
This pain and confusion are overwhelming and disorienting.

Stopped me from believin'
This pain has caused him to give up on his sense of hope and optimism, at least for the time being.

Turn me around again
He wants to regain that sense of hope, or at least find a new perspective.

Said that we can do it
Someone, perhaps his girlfriend, has reassured him that they can work through their relationship issues and find happiness together again.

You know I wanna do it again
Despite his pain, he still wants to try again and believes that things could be better.

(Sugar Ray say)
This vocalization is a reference to the band's own name and functions as a sort of refrain or interlude between verses.

Oh
This is an expression of surprise or realization accompanied by a musical interjection.

(Every morning) oh
This echoes the earlier line and emphasizes the importance of the daily renewal he experiences.

(Every morning when I wake up)
Again, this phrase reinforces the idea of daily renewal, and reminds the listener that the song is largely about waking up to a new day.

(Shut the door, baby, don't say a word)
This line is somewhat ambiguous, but could be interpreted as an attempt to shut out outside negativity, or as a request for privacy with his girlfriend.

Oh (she always rights the wrong)
This line is a more direct reference to his girlfriend, emphasizing her ability to correct problems or smooth out conflicts in their relationship.

Oh (she always rights, she always rights)
This repetition further emphasizes her qualities as a problem-solver, while also providing a rhythm to the song.

(Shut the door, baby, shut the door, baby)
This line could be seen as irrelevant, or as another reminder to close off the outside world and focus on the relationship.

Every morning there's a heartache hanging from the corner
This is a parallel to the earlier line about the halo, but instead of hope and optimism, he wakes up to a sense of pain.

I know it's not mine and I know she thinks she loves me
He's feeling disconnected and isolated from his partner, and doubts the depth of her feelings.

But I never can believe what she said
He lacks trust in his girlfriend and her ability to be honest with him.

Something so deceivin'
This experience and lack of trust feel like a betrayal to him, and are causing him further pain.

When you stop believin'
Once again, he's emphasizing the importance of hope and positivity in relationships, and how losing that can be the beginning of the end.

Turn me around again
He's still hoping to find a new direction or purpose for their relationship.

Said we couldn't do it
This reflects his pessimism, or perhaps a conversation he's had with his girlfriend where they've agreed to let things end.

You know I wanna do it again
Despite this negativity, he's still holding out hope for another chance or reconciliation.

She always rights the wrong
This line repeats from before, reinforcing the idea of his girlfriend as a problem-solver and source of stability.

For me, baby
This emphasizes the special connection he feels with her, and his appreciation for her efforts to make things better.

Every morning when I wake up
Once again, the song returns to the idea of daily renewal and the potential for each new day to bring something better.

Every morning (turn me around again)
This could be seen as a plea for the universe or fate to intervene on his behalf, or as a desire to find a new direction to take.

Every morning when I wake up
Repetition of the earlier line, once again emphasizing the importance of each new day.

Every morning
The title of the song is repeated in its entirety, functioning as a sort of mantra or refrain.

(Shut the door, baby, shut the door)
This line, repeated yet again, reinforces the idea of closing off distractions and focusing on the relationship.
