Razorlight is a four-piece consisting of Borrell (vocals & guitar), Björn Ågren (guitar), Carl Dalemo (bass) and Andy Burrows (drums)
Their debut album, Up All Night, was released on June 28, 2004, reaching number 3 in the UK album charts on 4 July. The critical reception was generally good, receiving good reviews from NME, Q magazine and Billboard, although they were also accused of lack of imagination and unoriginality for allegedly borrowing ideas from other influential bands, notably The Strokes. They appear to polarize opinion. NME wrote that the album: "bristles with passion, energy and, most importantly, amazing songs", while they were described elsewhere as "nearly everything wrong with rock and roll today". Their fans, though, embrace the music for its simple melodies and multi-layered, easy-going compositions.
Frontman Johnny Borrell caused some controversy and surprise when he likened himself to musical legend Bob Dylan, quipping "If Dylan's making the chips then I'm drinking the champagne". This led to suggestions of self-promotion. This statement was taken out of context however as Borrell was comparing his and Dylan's first albums, not their overall career. The band became very popular on the London music scene when they arrived earlier in the year. Large demand caused the band to play extra shows, including a 7,000+ capacity gig at Alexandra Palace. The album was heavily marketed in the UK.

And rip it up, yeah
That's what it's there for
That's what it's there for
So rip it up, yeah
Ah rip it up and tear it up
Until you really don't know why
Until you don't know why
I seen a man there
Down at the station
He's got a head of ideas
Has just too many reservations
It turns me round, yeah
It breaks my heart, yeah
It rips me up and tears me up
You know I really don't know why
You know I don't know why
She says love is the law
Why don't you come round no more?
She says I loved you so much more
When you were down on the floor
I said well well
That ain't nothing
You got to rip it up
You got to pick a stitch
And turn me round, yeah
And break my heart, yeah
And rip me up and tear me up
You know I really don't know why
I really don't know why
Hey girl, get on the dance floor
Just like I told you
That's what it's there for
That's what it's there for
So rip it up, yeah
Ah rip it up and tear it up
Until you really don't know why
Until you don't know why
So rip it up, yeah
And tear it up. yeah
And just please don't stop
And rip it up
The lyrics of the song "Rip It Up" by Razorlight are a call to action. The song encourages individuals, particularly a girl or woman, to get on the dance floor and release any inhibition or reservation by fully immersing themselves in the music. The song advocates for breaking boundaries by ripping it up and tearing it up until the individuals "really don't know why." This could be interpreted as a metaphor for living life to the fullest, pushing oneself beyond one's comfort zone, and not letting anything hold you back.
The lyrics also contain a reference to a man with "too many reservations" and a broken heart. This could suggest the contrast between someone who is limiting themselves by being overly cautious and someone who is embracing life's opportunities. The line "She says love is the law, Why don't you come around no more?" could be interpreted as someone expressing frustration at a lover's reluctance to fully engage in their relationship. The final verse echoes the previous calls to rip it up and tear it up, indicating to the listener to keep pushing and not stopping.
