Green Aisles
Real Estate Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Under dormant trees
Under bright lit skies
Mountains of maple leaves
Standing side by side

The phone lines
The street lights
Led me to you
And if you
Just sit tight
I'll be there soon

All those wasted miles
All those aimless drives
Through green aisles
Our careless lifestyle
It was not so unwise
No

I rode right pass the train tracks on
Ancient as the stone
Blacked out on a bicycle
I made my way back home

The houses were humming
All through the night
And winter was coming
But that was alright

All those wasted miles
All those aimless drives through green aisles
Our careless lifestyle
It was not so unwise
No

The phone lines
The street lights
Led me to you
And if you
Just sit tight
I'll be there soon

All those wasted miles
All those aimless drives through green aisles
Our careless lifestyle
It was not so unwise
No

All those wasted miles
All those aimless drives through green aisles
Our careless lifestyle

It was not so unwise
No

Overall Meaning

The song "Green Aisles" by Real Estate explores the concept of finding beauty in the ordinary and mundane landscape of everyday life. The opening lines of the song, "under dormant trees, under bright lit skies, mountains of maple leaves standing side by side", paints a picture of a serene and peaceful scenery that might go unnoticed in our daily routine. The first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song, which is about finding contentment and joy in the little things that surround us.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "all those wasted miles, all those aimless drives through green aisles" which suggests that the singer has spent a lot of time wandering through the streets, often without a clear destination in mind. However, this doesn't seem to bother him, as he characterizes this behavior as a "careless lifestyle" that is not necessarily unwise.

The second verse of the song describes the singer's journey back home, where he rode past ancient train tracks and blacked out on his bicycle. The houses were humming and winter was coming, but the singer is unperturbed by it all. The final chorus reiterates the idea that the street lights and phone lines have led him to someone special, and that all those "wasted miles" were worth it.

Overall, "Green Aisles" is a song about embracing the beauty of everyday life, finding contentment in the mundane, and appreciating the people and scenery that make up our surroundings.

Line by Line Meaning

Under dormant trees
Beneath the sleeping trees

Under bright lit skies
Beneath the illuminated sky

Mountains of maple leaves
Piles of autumn leaves

Standing side by side
Lining up in a row

The phone lines
The wires carrying our voices

The street lights
The lamps guiding our way

Led me to you
Brought me to your doorstep

And if you
If you wait for me

Just sit tight
Be patient for a moment

I'll be there soon
I'll arrive shortly

All those wasted miles
All those pointless journeys

All those aimless drives
All those directionless trips

Through green aisles
Down the tree-lined roads

Our careless lifestyle
Our carefree way of living

It was not so unwise
It wasn't such a bad idea after all

I rode right past the train tracks on
I biked alongside the railway

Ancient as the stone
As old as the rocks beside it

Blacked out on a bicycle
Unconscious as I cycled

I made my way back home
I found my way back to my abode

The houses were humming
There was a buzz in the air

All through the night
Throughout the hours of darkness

And winter was coming
And the cold season was approaching

But that was alright
But that was acceptable

One of the most beautiful songs ever written. The lyrics, the melody, the instrumentals... all amazing. Makes me miss someone I never really knew.

A song about a guy (who may be) drunk off his ass, biking home, fueled and guided by his memories of the woman he loved years ago, and still loves to this day.
No pretense.
No self-aggrandizement.
Just... a simple song about love, memory, determination, and self-assurance, as seen through the lens of a long and fruitful life with his love.
It's as pure a love song as you're likely to find.
And it grooves so hard.
