Saturday
Real Estate Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was born on a Saturday
What about you?
Well you know, I already know that you were too
I will go on a screened-in porch on a rainstorm
I won't hold fast, you're waiting past onto no form

A strong current will sweep you downstream
It would be best not to resist
The line you're hanging on is fraying
You may as well loosen your grip

But a stranger is living in your old house
What does when you were born still say about you?
It'd be best to jettison what you can't really do

A strong current will sweep you downstream
It would be best not to resist

The line you're hanging on is fraying
You may as well loosen your grip

Overall Meaning

The song Saturday by Real Estate explores themes of nostalgia and letting go. The opening line "I was born on a Saturday / What about you?" sets a tone of reminiscence and reflects on the personal significance of one's birth day. The following chorus of "Well you know, I already know that you were too" creates a sense of commonality and connection between the singer and the listener.

The second verse moves into an image of seeking refuge on a screened-in porch during a rainstorm. However, the line "I won't hold fast, you're waiting past onto no form" suggests a reluctance to cling to the past or fixed ideas of who we are. The subsequent lines provide a metaphorical warning about the dangers of resisting inevitable changes and the need to let go. The phrase "You may as well loosen your grip" highlights the futility of holding on to what is fading away.

The final verse references the idea of a stranger living in an old house and the question "What does when you were born still say about you?" This further challenges the notion of the self as static and fixed. The song ultimately encourages the listener to embrace the present moment and to accept the inevitability of change.

The tempo change is flawless, that somber mood the piano sets glides right beneath layers of bright guitars. Then martin tells us it's okay to give up fighting in that sweet voice of his. "you may as well loosen your grip." ...I think i will.

The whole song is AMAZING, but the beginning and ending, in particular, is SOOO fucking good. The beginning starts with a nice piano melody. Where the ending is done with a sweet guitar solo (i think) that is so emotionally riveting. EASILY my favorite song of the album.

Reminds me of the slow steps I took to finally move on, and join the others in the fast-paced rhythm of real life.
