With a contract to Mercury Records (1975), McEntire began her professional career singing heavily pop-influenced ballads, a far cry from the neotraditionalist movement she would help lead a few years later.
"I Don't Want To Be A One Night Stand" became her first charting single in 1976. Her first Top 10 hit "(You Lift Me) Up to Heaven" followed four years later, and in 1982 she scored her first #1 hit with "Can't Even Get The Blues."
Frustrated at her limited commercial success, McEntire left Mercury and signed with MCA Records in 1984. 1984's "Just A Little Love" wasn't much different form her Mercury material and was only moderately successful. However, another album followed later that same year, titled "My Kind of Country." This was a return-to-roots record, complete with fiddles and steel. It was comprised largely of covers of classic country songs, as well as original songs such as "How Blue" and the Harlan Howard-penned "Somebody Should Leave", both of which reached #1 on the Billboard country singles chart.
In the early 1990s McEntire expanded her audience by adopting a softer, more pop-oriented sound. She became one of the best-selling country artists of all time, releasing three volumes of greatest hits collections.
Since that first #1 hit in 1982, she's forked out 21 more chartbusters, which are all recapped on "Reba #1s" released on November 22nd, 2005. The 2-disc compilation features all 22 number one singles (according to Billboard magazine) in chronological order, including two new tracks "You're Gonna Be" and "Love Needs A Holiday." "Reba #1s" also contains 11 singles that reached the #1 spot in publications other than Billboard.
She won the Female Vocalist of the Year award from the Country Music Association four times in a row (a record she holds with Martina McBride), and had dozens of Top Ten hits during the 80s. For her contribution to the recording industry, Reba McEntire has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7000 Hollywood Blvd. In 1995, she was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
She is one of only six solo women (others include Shania Twain, Barbara Mandrell, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, and Taylor Swift), to win the Country Music Association's highest honor, "Entertainer Of The Year". McEntire continued to hit the charts through the 2000s, as well as appearing in television and film, most notably Tremors, a cult horror movie series, Forever Love, and One Night at McCool's. She also starred as Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway, receiving critical acclaim.
From 2001 to 2007, Reba starred in the hit WB television show, Reba (with Texan actor Christopher Rich as her philandering ex-husband), even getting a visit from fellow country star Dolly Parton who played Reba's character's supervisor at a real estate firm.

Live in this town
And I had to run into him
When I saw him there
On that busy street
Those feelings came back again
There was no where to run
He walked up to me
Looked in my eyes
And still
The world stood still
I couldn't move
And all I could feel
Was this aching in my heart
Saying I loved him
Still
He said how've you been
It's great to see you again
You're really a sight for sore eyes
I said I can't complain
Oh, I'm doin' fine
We talked
As the people rushed by
We laughed about old times
And all we went through
That's when he hugged me
And said I've missed you
And still
My world stood still
I couldn't move
And all I could feel
Was this aching in my heart
Saying I loved him
Still
That's when she walked up to him
He said this is my wife
I gave my best smile
But I was dying inside
He said we gotta go now
It's getting late
It was so good to see you
And then they walked away
And still
My world stood still
I couldn't move
And all I could feel
Was this aching in my heart
Saying I loved him
Still
Reba McEntire's "And Still" is a song about encountering a former lover unexpectedly. The lyrics describe how the singer runs into her former lover in the middle of a bustling town, and despite her best efforts to suppress her feelings, old emotions resurface when they hug each other. The song describes the powerful emotions that are awakened when someone is reunited with a former love, and the struggle to reconcile current emotions with the love that was once shared.
The lyrics capture the pain and longing that are so common in losing someone we love. The singer tries to hold back her emotions, but they break through as she remembers old times and deep feelings. The use of the phrase "and still" throughout the lyrics of the song reinforces the idea that those feelings never really go away, no matter how hard the singer tries to move on.
This song is not just about lost love, but it also touches upon the idea of what happens when people move on from each other. How do they go on to create new lives and relationships when there are still strong feelings from the past? This song asks those questions in a beautiful and poignant way.

Thousands of people
There are scores of people living in this small town
Live in this town
It's a flourishing town with lots of people living in it
And I had to run into him
By sheer coincidence, I had to bump into him here
When I saw him there
I noticed him standing there on that busy street
On that busy street
It was on a crowded and bustling street
Those feelings came back again
Those long lost feelings that I thought were gone forever resurfaced
There was nowhere to run
I was stuck there and had no escape
Nowhere to hide
I couldn't avoid the situation
He walked up to me
He approached me and came closer
Looked in my eyes
He made eye contact with me
And still
Even then, in that moment
The world stood still
Everything else faded away and became unimportant
I couldn't move
I was completely paralyzed with emotion
And all I could feel
The only sensation I had was
Was this aching in my heart
My heart was heavy with pain
Saying I loved him
It was saying that I still had feelings for him
He said how've you been
He inquired about my well-being
It's great to see you again
He was delighted to see me after all these years
You're really a sight for sore eyes
He complimented me on my appearance
I said I can't complain
I replied that everything was going well
Oh, I'm doing fine
I was doing well and trying to play it cool
We talked
We conversed
As the people rushed by
While the crowd hurried past us
We laughed about old times
We reminisced and chuckled about the past
And all we went through
Everything that we had experienced together
That's when he hugged me
He embraced me suddenly
And said I've missed you
He expressed how much he had missed me
That's when she walked up to him
Just then, his wife appeared out of nowhere
He said this is my wife
He introduced me to his spouse
I gave my best smile
I tried to put on a pleasant expression
But I was dying inside
Internally, I was struggling to contain my emotions
He said we gotta go now
He informed me that he and his wife had to leave
It's getting late
It was getting late and they had to go home
It was so good to see you
He bid me farewell and expressed his happiness at meeting me again
And then they walked away
They left and disappeared into the crowd
