Forming of the band and first two albums:
Rebellion is a Heavy Metal band from Germany. It was formed in 2001 by ex-Grave Digger members Uwe Lulis (guitar) and Tomi Göttlich (bass).
Their first album - A Tragedy In Steel - Shakespeare's Macbeth - is a concept album about William Shakespeare's work Macbeth and includes spoken passages. Spoken passages and narrations are done by members of the band and other collaborators as the story's characters.
The second album called Born A Rebel involved more standard heavy-metal lyrics – about motorcycles, metal, war, etc. – and the music was somewhat rougher.
Viking Trilogy:
In 2005 they released the first part of a trilogy about the Vikings and Norse mythology. First part is called 'Sagas Of Iceland'. As title suggests, lyrics are about viking sagas.
The second part 'Miklagard' is out in 2007. Speed, powerful and heavy guitar riffs repleaced middle tempo songs of the previous album. Lyricalwise, album is about pack of vikings who left their homeland, Sweden, to travel to Miklagard. Every song talks about another adventure they took along the way.
Third and final album - "Arise: From Ginnugagap To Ragnarök" - came out in 2009. Musicaly it's rougher and heavier than the previous two. Lyrics are about Norse mythology, from conception of the world (Ginnugagap) to its final battle (Ragnarök) and finally, its destruction.
Changes in the band:
Uwe Lulis, Simone Wenzel and Gerd Lücking all left the band in late 2010. Michael Seifert and Tomi Göttlich were the only remaining members at the time. In 2011 new line-up was forming. The first new member who joined them was Oliver Geibig on guitar. Oliver worked with the band before - he produced their second album. Later on Stephan Karut joined the band on guitar and David Faifer on drums. David soon left the band because he lived too far from the band and Matthias Karle took his spot. With that final change new strong line-up was formed and soon they entered the studio to record a new album.
Arminius:
The sixth studio album titled Arminius: Furor Teutonicus, with new line-up, was released on October 26th, 2012. Arminius is another conceptual piece and this time, as album title says, album is based on Arminius. Arminius was a chieftain of the Germanic Cherusci who defeated a Roman army in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.

Runes
Rebellion Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
For nice icy nights
Facing the endless darkness around me
Wounded by my own spear
On the wind cold tree
I am Odin - Hallowed by my own rite
Lets my life slowly fade
From a bough of Yggdrasil I hung
Committed to my fate
Delivered to the fright
Of endless ice and night
I had to gaze into the misty world
Of Niflheim - the dire nothern frost empire
In my self chosen solitude
Runes you will reveal
In the dust of ancient times
Remember my sacrifice
When I hung for these nine nights
Runes they were concealed
In the dust of ancient times
I died to be reborn
When I suffered these nine nights
When I begun to grow
Evanescent by pain
I sunk from the tree with a sigh
The knowledge of the dead I learnt
Cause only cruelty can forge
And then word just followed word
The lyrics of Rebellion's song "Runes" recount the mythological tale of Odin, the chief god in Norse mythology, who is said to have hanged himself on the World Tree, Yggdrasil, in order to gain knowledge of the runes, which were thought to be a source of magical power and divination. The opening lines of the song describe Odin's self-sacrifice, as he hangs wounded and alone on the tree, enduring the icy cold of night and the endless darkness that surrounds him. The lyrics then go on to explain that it was only through this act of extreme self-denial that Odin was able to penetrate the secrets of the universe and gain access to the mystical power of the runes.
As the song progresses, Odin's experience is described in more detail. He sinks deeper and deeper into a state of pain and suffering as he hangs on the tree, learning the secrets of life and death from the spirits of the dead. He gazes into the "misty world" of Niflheim, the dark and terrifying realm of the dead, but he does so with a sense of purpose and determination, knowing that the knowledge he acquires will be invaluable to him in his role as the king of the gods.
In the final lines of the song, Odin is reborn, having gained the mystical power of the runes through his sacrifice. The lyrics make it clear that this knowledge was not easy to come by, and that Odin's triumph was hard-won. The song ends with a call to all those who seek to wield the power of the runes, reminding them to remember the sacrifice that Odin made so that they could possess this magical gift.
