Way Back When
Reconcile Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember way back when I started getting involved with all this. so many faces I don't see anymore. names were named followed by a tale, "he even let his hair grow long". I wonder what the one who told me that is doing now. so what's the score so far? a hundred souls forgotten and a bunch of us who are still trying to bring it down. believe me it is hard keeping yourself toghether while everyone else just falls apart. the way things were, and the songs we'd sing, and all the plans we've ever made, every last promise unkept are all the memories you spoiled. but here's me, remember me?, to remind you of all that cause it was there and it was real just like you and me. my days are running out I'm trying to make them count in everything i do

Overall Meaning

In the song "Way Back When" by Reconcile, the artist reflects on his past involvement with a group and how so many faces have been forgotten over time. He talks about names being named followed by a tale, such as someone letting their hair grow long, and wonders what the one who told him that is doing now. He reflects on the memories of the group, including the way things were, the songs they'd sing, and all the plans they had made, but realizes that every last promise had gone unkept, with all the memories being spoiled. Despite this, the artist reminds his listeners that all of these memories were real and were important, and he's trying to make every day count.

The song contains a sense of nostalgia and reflection, as the artist recognizes that things were tough and things didn't turn out the way they planned. However, he's still grateful for the memories he had and the people he met, even if he doesn't see them anymore. He acknowledges that it's hard to keep going when everyone else is falling apart, but he's trying to make the most of his days.

Overall, "Way Back When" is a powerful reminder of the importance of memories, even the painful ones, and how they shape us into who we are today. The song is a call to make every day count and to not forget where we came from, even when it's hard.

Thanks Nick 🙏🏻

Hottest Tips from this Video that I see, as recommended by Nick:

16:32 - If you can’t reconcile (despite all efforts) and the difference is of an incidental amount, it is ok to have YNAB enter an adjusting figure to get the amounts in alignment.
I’ve never needed to do that - it’s a nerd thing 🤓 but, trust me, it’s a demo in the ‘law of diminishing returns’. Choose life!

18:50 - Recommendation to reconcile WEEKLY, at a minimum regardless of how often you get paid (fortnightly or monthly is NOT often enough, unless you are a pro)! 😳
As a Newbie - some 9 month ago - I thought it was a ‘monthly only’ process; boy was I wrong! I now press the reconcile button whenever I check my bank account and match it to the corresponding YNAB balances which, typically happens a couple of times a week - again, it’s a nerd thing! 🤓. Trust me - it’s a real ‘stitch in time’ metaphor! Do it (reconcile) often and, save yourself ‘more time’ and you’ll be sure to stick to the habit of budgeting within YNAB!

Thanks Yevhenii! Yeah, I'm not sure if/when they plan to implement reconciling on Mobile, but it's certainly helpful if you can gain access to a laptop to do it.
As for Discover, I really like their credit cards. I don't have experience with checking/savings much, but I've personally used their credit card for 8 years and I've had nothing but a great experience.
- Free credit score
- Great double your cashback bonus in the first year
- Really good mobile app and online portal
- Great customer support when I've called
- Pretty good rotating cash back categories

Good luck!

Hey Nick - Thanks so much for all your videos! I am learning so much and WE are getting a handle on what we want as we look forward to retiring! I am still in my trial subscription and trying to learn everything I can so we can start fresh in February. We've been going for about 2 weeks and i just watched your reconciling video. Everything went ok with the checking account, but our HELOC account (which we use as a credit card account, maybe this is wrong) anyway, the amounts aren't deducting off the balance like it should. I refreshed, but don't know what to do....ie i have 1000. and balance is 1000....i make a payment for 500...but balance says 700. Any ideas?? Thanks so much

Wonderful video Nick, thank you! Not reconciling often enough causes people to give up on YNAB. They think it is like balancing a checkbook, but it's much easier!

Nick True - MappedOutMoney

Totally! It's a big pain point for folks. Thanks so much for commenting Harrison, glad you liked the video!

Another awesome video that breaks down what it means to reconcile and I love that you provide real world situations.
I had no idea how to do the adjustment if numbers don't match. I gave up and just started a new budget because it was so many transactions to figure out.

Nick True - MappedOutMoney

Hey thanks Paul! Super glad that the video was helpful for you. Reconciling definitely is a lot to learn at first. Just keep on keeping on my friend!

I highly recommend two things:

1) watch out for transactions for 'general' things like "Amazon" getting auto categorized
2) following directly from #1 - not sure how to do it on apps, but on PC, under your my budget menu right up top, go to manage payees. Here you can combine multiple payees into a single one (do you shop at two similarly named grocery stores (Jewel Osco #3235 and Jewel Osco #3634) and want them combined? You can do that. You can also tell ynab to categorize anything containing "jewel osco" as groceries. You can also tell ynab "hey, never automatically assign a category to x store" (for me, I shop at costco, and also get gas there. It's easier for me to manually assign gas vs. groceries than it is to have to manually change it - especially when a good number of my in store purchases really fall under other categories)

(And you can mix and match those - I still have all of my Amazon transactions merged into one Amazon payee, but itemize each transaction individually.)

John S

Great video man concise and not too confusing. People over complicate the transactions in YNAB. It can make the whole process frustrating. Thanks for creating this video. You gained a sub :)
