Since I Fell For You
Red Garland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you just give love
And never get love
You'd better let love depart
I know it's so, and yet I know
I can't get you out of my heart

You made me leave my happy home
You took my love and now you're gone
Since I fell for you

Love brings such misery and pain
I guess I'll never be the same
Since I fell for you

Well, it's too bad
And it's too sad
But I'm in love with you
You love me, then you snub me
But what can I do?
I'm so in love with you

I guess I'll never see the light
I get the blues most every night

Since I fell for you
Since I fell for you

Overall Meaning

The song "Since I Fell for You" by Red Garland is a soulful ballad about unrequited love and the pain it brings. The first verse speaks about the disappointment that comes when you give love and never receive it. The singer recommends letting love go in such a situation, but he finds himself unable to do so despite knowing it will only cause more hurt in the end. The second verse reveals that the woman he fell for took his love and left him, causing him to leave his happy home. He expresses the misery and pain that comes with love and how it has changed him forever.

The third verse speaks to the complexity of his feelings for this woman. He acknowledges that it's unfortunate and sad that he's in love with her, even though she snubs him. He's so in love with her that he feels powerless to do anything about it. He concludes by admitting that he doesn't see any hope for the future and that he's stuck in a perpetual state of sadness since he fell for her.

There are no useless notes on his piano performance at all. It's beautiful and wonderful.Paul Chambers is also a great bassist. His solo perfomane is also amazing. This Red Garland Trio is great, I miss you.

Thanks for posting this stuff which brings back a lot of comfortable childhood feelings. I used to hear a lot of Red Garland records around the house in the 50s through 80's.
Also Tatum, Waller, Rushing, Lady Day, Oscar, Monk.

This brings back so many memories ....seeing Red almost every night at the Arandas club in Dallas Texas. Red always treated me and my friend Quesay like we were celebrity's...when we would walk in....he would play Angel Eyes...I went there on first dates with ladies I wanted to impress

It’s just so nice to see these, both of your replies. I am a 24 y/o beginner in jazz improvisation and always fond of Red Garland’s play. Wish I were there!

Hi Archie, I know you don't know me but I'm Mike Garland Jr.(Mike's son, Red's Grandson). My mother used to tell me about this place all the time and sounded like a great place to hear music and go out. Glad to know his music brought back good memories. Take care.
