Under the Bridge

Sometimes I feel like I don't have a partner
Sometimes I feel like my only friend
Is the city I live in, the city of angels
Lonely as I am, together we cry
I drive on her streets 'cause she's my companion
I walk through her hills 'cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds and she kisses me windy
Well, I never worry, now that is a lie

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
Yeah, yeah, yeah

It's hard to believe that there's nobody out there
It's hard to believe that I'm all alone
At least I have her love, the city, she loves me
Lonely as I am, together we cry

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh, no, no-no, yeah, yeah
Love me, I say, yeah yeah
One time

(Under the bridge downtown)
Is where I drew some blood
(Under the bridge downtown)
I could not get enough
(Under the bridge downtown)
Forgot about my love
(Under the bridge downtown)
I gave my life away
Yeah, yeah
Oh, no, no-no-no, yeah, yeah

Oh, no, I said, oh, yeah, yeah
Where I stay

Overall Meaning

"Under the Bridge" by Red Hot Chili Peppers is a song about loneliness and connection. The lyrics reflect the singer's feelings of isolation and his assertion that the only relationship he has is with the city of angels, a reference to his home in Los Angeles. The singer admits to feeling alone and unsupported, but finds solace in the city's affection. When he drives on the streets or walks through the hills, he feels like the city knows him and sees him for who he truly is. He speaks of his good deeds, which the city acknowledges with a metaphorical kiss, but also recognizes that he is lying about never worrying.

The chorus of the song represents the singer's desire to go back to the place where he felt loved and secure. He doesn't want to feel the pain and isolation he experienced on a specific day. The phrase "take me to the place I love, take me all the way" highlights his need to return to a place or a feeling that was once lost.

The song's bridge is an interlude where the singer reflects on his past, positive and negative experiences. When he was under a bridge downtown, he drew some blood, which may represent self-harm or drug use. He forgot about his love and seemingly gave his life away, which could point towards a time of addiction or suicidal thoughts. The bridge explains the singer's longing to return to the place he loves, both literally and emotionally.

The fact that the producers told rhcp to try & calm down the crowd & they come out and play this is fucking savage 😂

@ARO323

Absolutely the best fuck you they could have given to ‘the man’ 🤣

@user-mk6rg6ef8s

This is not true, the song was on the original setlist, and Hendrix's relatives asked to play a song in his honor.

@ClickToPreview

I was there in the crowd. Maybe it was on the setlist, but it pretty much happened on cue then (!) as morons had lit the outer barrier of the venue on fire a few minutes earlier.

@neshnevin9786

This video is just overwhelming. A massive fire in the audience and Flea playing completely in the nude while the whole band plays an impeccable cover of one of Jimmy Hendrix's best songs.

@jeremypr

100%, so epic. rock n roll

@gioravalico550

agreed. seriously one of the best rock'n'roll videos on youtube. 2:46 of pure juice.. this belongs in a museum.

@km6xu
