03. Scar Tissue
Red Hot Chili Peppers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Scar tissue that I wish you saw
Sarcastic mister know-it-all
Close your eyes and I'll kiss you, 'cause
With the birds I'll share

With the birds I'll share this lonely viewin'
With the birds I'll share this lonely viewin'
Push me up against the wall
Young Kentucky girl in a push-up bra
Fallin' all over myself
To lick your heart and taste your health 'cause

With the birds I'll share this lonely viewin'
With the birds I'll share this lonely viewin'
With the birds I'll share this lonely view

Blood loss in a bathroom stall
A southern girl with a scarlet drawl
I wave goodbye to ma and pa
'Cause with the birds I'll share

With the birds I'll share this lonely viewin'
With the birds I'll share this lonely viewin'

Soft spoken with a broken jaw
Step outside but not to brawl and
Autumn's sweet, we call it fall
I'll make it to the moon if I have to crawl and

With the birds I'll share this lonely viewin'
With the birds I'll share this lonely viewin'
With the birds I'll share this lonely view
Scar tissue that I wish you saw
Sarcastic mister know-it-all
Close your eyes and I'll kiss you, 'cause
With the birds I'll share

With the birds I'll share this lonely viewin'
With the birds I'll share this lonely viewin'
With the birds I'll share this lonely view

Overall Meaning

"Scar Tissue" is a song by American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, released in 1999. The lyrics of the song express the feeling of loneliness and isolation that comes with dealing with emotional pain. The first verse talks of "scar tissue that I wish you saw," referring to the emotional scars that the singer carries and wishes others would understand. The second verse talks about an encounter with a young Kentucky girl and the singer's desire to taste her "health," meaning that the singer wants to be close to her and feel alive again. The third verse tells the story of a Southern girl with a "scarlet drawl" and the singer's desire to escape from his past and start anew.

The refrain, "With the bird I'll share this lonely view," is a metaphor for the singer's companionship with birds, which can be seen as symbols of freedom, but also of loneliness. In times of distress, the singer feels a connection with these creatures and shares the same "lonely view" that they do. The song's lyrics express the desire to escape from one's pain and find some sort of solace in nature or companionship.

My Dad’s funeral song. Today is his 58th birthday, the first without him. I miss you Dad.

I'm sorry. My Dad was 56. I'd like to say it gets easier but the truth is I just learned to live with it. Smile when you can and remember him fondly. ❤

I honestly think this may be the greatest Red Hot Chili Peppers song of all time. Obviously they have plenty of other insanely good songs, but there's just something special about Scar Tissue. The lyrics, the guitar solos (especially the last one), the meaning behind this song (knowing everything the band went through right before this time). It's beautiful.
