So we were down in Brazil and, man
That place is wild
We were in Rio de Janeiro, and uh
We had this, this sort of, uh
Security-guard type guy and he was
Supposed to take us around
I said "Hey, could, you know
Could you take us to the, the favelas and
Show us the prostitution, and the drug
Deals, and the night fights, and theyou know
The street life
Of your town?" And he said "Sure" So we
We pull up to this hooker and
She's wearing some kind of
A, a bright green miniskirt, and it
Turns out it's a transsexual, and he
Says "Get over here!" And she comes
Over and she thinks she's busted
But she's not busted naw, she's not busted
He just wanted to smack
Her on the ass a few times
And say, "Hey, what's up, girl?"

Get out of bed and I clear up my head and
I don't want to go but I do it instead
We are dreams within a dream
Get into bed and I turn off my head
And I started to float
Was it something she said?
We are dreams within a dream

So I remember we got our driver's license
And my friend Hillel had this little
Datsun painted green, and
Hollywood would get so crazy in the winter
The rains would come and the
Hills would just kind of melt down
Into the city lights, and, well, you
Know, we'd smoke weed and we'd
Go up in the hills, and we'd listen
To progressive rock music, and just kind
Of trip out and well, we would
Dream, you know, we would dream
And we would talk about what we wanted
To do, and we would talk about
Girls and music and, you know, hillel
Wanted to be a rock star
And I didn't even know what that was
I was like, "Whatever you want to
Do, man, I'm coming with you
I'm right with you my friend"

Get out of bed and I clear up my head and
I don't want to go but I do it instead
We are dreams within a dream
Get into bed and I turn off my head
And I started to float
Was it something she said?
We are dreams within a dream

Why in the world would you want it to be?
Why would you want to take it so
So literally?
All these things that come down from the sky
Raining upon your head
Make you stop and wonder why, ah!
Can't they just spell it out, make it clear
Make it easy to read
For the simple man like me? I don't think so
I reach out to my family and I say
"It's not about religion and the God sitting
In a chair in the sky
With a punishing hand, no
It's about heaven in your heart"
Now when can we start?
I wanna choose love instead of fear
Won't you come right now, over here

And be a part of my, ah
Let me make it easier this time, I love you

Overall Meaning

"Open/Close" by Red Hot Chili Peppers is a song that delves into the band's experiences in Brazil, specifically in Rio de Janeiro. The lyrics depict a wild and adventurous journey through Rio, guided by a security guard who takes them to various provocative and dangerous places, such as the favelas, where they witness prostitution, drug deals, and street fights. The song highlights the band's curiosity and eagerness to explore every aspect of the city, embracing both the beautiful and seedy sides of life.

The lyrics also touch upon the theme of dreams and aspirations. The band reminisces about their younger days in Hollywood, where they would listen to progressive rock music, smoke weed, and dream about their goals. Hillel, one of the band members, dreams of becoming a rock star, while the singer expresses his loyalty and willingness to follow Hillel's lead, stating that he doesn't even know what being a rock star means but is ready to support his friend in whatever he wants to achieve.

Towards the end of the song, the lyrics take a contemplative turn, questioning the need for literal explanations and the complexity of life's mysteries. The band expresses a desire for clarity and simplicity, rejecting the idea of a punishing God in the sky and emphasizing the concept of finding heaven within oneself. Love and choosing love over fear become the central message, inviting others to join in embracing this mindset.

Overall, "Open/Close" reflects the band's adventurous spirit, their dreams, and their philosophical ponderings about life and love.

This song pretty sums what RHCP is. These four human beings are absolute masters of their craft. John was amazing with the band, no doubt, but if there was ever a doubt on whether they could thrive without him, these songs, THIS song, this OUTRO, it proves they're still an amazing band unlike any other in the history of music. They are the greatest band of our era and one of the greatest of all time.

Säger

This outro is one of the best things they have ever made. Thanks Anthony, Josh, Chad and Flea. I love you all, forever.

Edwin Montesinos

"You know, Hillel wanted to be a rockstar. I didn't even know what that was. I was like: Whatever you wanna do, man, I'm coming with you, I'm right with you, my friend". Gives me the chills.

ben ami noam

Me too, every time I hear that line.

Ryano

Edwin Montesinos I think you mean "Gives me the chillis" :>

John Miller

That line is the namesake for the album, surely? "I'm with you, my friend"

Luc Zwinkels

+John Miller It's not actually. The album title refers to Josh joining the band, if I remember correctly it was also Josh who came up with the title.

Josh Brookes

I love it when he says 'Im With You'. Its like the culmination of 30 years of emotions

Zsófia Kiszely

If you read Anthony's book, the Scar Tissue, you will understand the hidden meaning of the song. It's beautiful and I love it so much!

FoggyMcFogFace

They kept the best of their b-sides for the last single of the I'm With You Sessions. This has an authentic RHCP feel to it, like some of the other b-sides, something a lot of the songs on the actual album miss. They're good, but half of them could've been created by another band. The style and overall feeling of this song is why I listen RHCP.
