Red Sleeping Beauty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All I can think about is summer
'Cause that's when I see you
I haven't been so lonesome
Since the day I met you

You in a dress of flowers
Me in a silent smile
I want to tell the world

Summer, it tells stories
About how we're supposed to be
Summer, it tells stories
About how it isn't, for me

I could tell you a secret
I'm down on my knees for you

I want a bed of flowers
You in a secret smile
I want to tell the world

Summer, it tells stories
About how we're supposed to be
Summer, it tells stories
About how it isn't, for me

Summer tells stories, uh huh!
Oh, sha la la la la la
Summer tells stories, uh huh!
Oh, sha la la la la la
Summer tells stories, uh huh!
Oh, sha la la la la la

Summer, it tells stories
About how we're supposed to be

Summer, it tells stories
About how it isn't, for me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Summer Tells Stories" by Red Sleeping Beauty are a reflection on the power of summer to conjure up memories of a past lover. The singer is consumed with thoughts of the summer season, because it reminds them of a past love interest. The lyrics reveal their loneliness since they met this person, and how they long to share their feelings with the world. The line, "You in a dress of flowers, me in a silent smile," describes a moment of intimacy between two people who perhaps are not yet able to articulate their emotions fully. The lines "Summer, it tells stories, about how we're supposed to be, summer, it tells stories, about how it isn't, for me," are particularly poignant. They suggest that the singer is struggling to reconcile the idealized version depicted in romantic stories with their own experience.

The song then takes a turn towards the confessional. The line "I could tell you a secret, I'm down on my knees for you" is an admission of vulnerability and a plea for affection. The desire for closeness is depicted in the lines "I want a bed of flowers, you in a secret smile, I want to tell the world." The song concludes with the repetition of the chorus, affirming the theme of the grip that summer has over the singer.

Overall, "Summer Tells Stories" is a beautifully poignant song that captures the complexities of missed connections, longing, and desire. The lyrics touch on themes of the struggle to express oneself and finding meaning in the experiences of the past.

@Denise F Yeah, thank you Perrault, for having taught to the young girls the value of sleeping.

Basile's goal was not to depict an ideal world.
Basile was a moralist that depicted the "upside-down" world he saw in reality, where the thugs were in power, to receive honors and wealth were the less deserving, and the ordinary people were NEVER saved by the powerful ones. For the powerless, the moment they meet the powerful ones, is the most dangerous, and only cleverness can save them, and the reward is to live.
The king doesn't rape Talia because it's right, but because he's the king, and he can do whatever he wants. He can can boast of his stunt in front of his wife, so endangering Talia and the children. None is going to make him responsible for that, like it or not. The finale where Talia marries him is not the best of the possible worlds, Is only the world where Talia, thanks to a final show of ingenuity (so, finally, not seleeping) avoids to be burned at the stake, so a victory anyway.

Perrault, that rewrote the story 70 years later, turning the king in a prince, stripping it of the rape (and even of a simple kiss), and making the version we know the most, had not a different moral, but different goals. His goal was to teach the values of modesty, patience, passivity... to young people, so sleeping and doing nothing is there rewarded with the love of your life.

For an even better comparison, you can compare Basile's "Petrosinella" (the original Rapunzel), with the version Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de La Force rewrote 60 years later, "Persinette". Petrosinella saves herself, Persinette (despite being written by a female writer and a real life "strong independent woman") is saved. Because Petrosinella was written with Basile's goal. Persinette was written as a dreamy fantasy for young aristocratic girls.

15:03 I would like to correct you on the King abandoning his daughter. He was under the impression that his daughter was dead and literally built her a mansion for a casket. It is very heartwearming and thoughtful when looking through the King's eyes.

CooperGal24

"Mansion for a casket"?
Are you talking about a "Mausoleum"? Because that's what they're called. It's a small building used as a resting place for the caskets or something.
