Drop
Red House Painters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So much that I can't say to you
My voice shakes from the hurt that I hide
Ashamed of my existence
And of my petty often wounded pride

I'd like to come home to see you
And to catch your sickness by the bedside
But then you'd know how much I really need you

All the love in an instant
Makes my life stop
But then my hate for you
Makes my feelings altogether drop

If only I were blind to your selfish fling
And your desperate cause
And didn't press you for the details
That threaten my physical flaws

I'd like to come home to see you
And embrace your illness under soft light
But then you'd know how much I really need you

All the love in an instant
Makes my life stop
But then my hate for you
Makes my feelings altogether drop

So much that I can say to you
With affection that I burn inside
You're aching from the distance
Avoiding strain that's running still alive

If only I could heal you
In the sprinkling of the ocean side
But then you'd know how much I really love you

All the love in an instant
Makes my life stop

But then my hate for you
Makes my feelings altogether drop

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Red House Painters' "Drop" are filled with conflicting emotions, as the singer expresses both their love and their hate for the person they're addressing. The opening lines reveal the singer's reluctance to express their true feelings, as their voice shakes from the hurt they're hiding. They feel ashamed of their existence and their pride, which they describe as petty and wounded. Despite this, the singer longs to see the person they're addressing, even though they fear that revealing their vulnerability will make them appear needy.

As the song progresses, the singer reveals their anger and hurt over the other person's supposed "selfish fling" and the threat it poses to their physical wellbeing. However, they also express intense love and affection for the same person, and wish they could heal them from afar. The song ends on a bittersweet note, as the singer's conflicting emotions of love and hate cause their feelings to altogether drop.

Overall, "Drop" is a deeply emotional and introspective song about the complexities of human relationships. It highlights the way that love and hate can coexist, and how our contradictory feelings can sometimes paralyze us.

I came upon them by accident as I was burning music off my computer, yeah looong time ago. They are amazing yet not many have heard of them. Glad I found them. His voice is absolutely beautiful and very hard to sing along to. Haunting.

The run of songs at the end of Ocean Beach - starting with Brockwell Park and culminating in Drop/outro - is one of the most devastating ends to an album I've ever heard. Such raw emotion, sadness and beauty, not many other musicians can evoke these feelings to the level that Kozelek does.

Andrew Drummond

too right…. better than most art and a heart worth hearing

Todd Michael Johnson

One of the most beautifully devastating songs ever crafted.
