Overall Meaning

Something I found out by accident:

I used a Lock&Lock plastic box and some spongewilpes sold for the kitchen.

But because I couldn't find a pretty low one I needed to stack multiple dishwashing spongewipes on top of each other.

I first didn't like it. But in hindsight it was great!

Why?

I can decide my water level and therefore how much wetness gets through the parchment paper on top.

If I fill the box really high my colors stay very wet and separate over time.

If I fill it just a bit the colors stay pretty dry, nearwals a dry palette.

So basically I found by accident the optimal pallette where I can decide how much wezness exactly gets through the paper!

Random mini fig question. I got the necron learn to paint kit and it says the minis were “push fit” to assemble, when you make minis that are “push fit” do you still use glue to stick them in place? (I.e. other foot to base) Or is the “push fit” system only on the entry level minis for beginners.

Big tip on homemade wet palettes: upside down tupperware. I use the LID of a tupperware as base instead of the "box", so there are no tall walls getting in the way.

Been doing this for a while now, the only problem is that the bigger size of the container means that the paints will dry out a bit more when storing. But otherwise works well.

I use the army painter one myself. A major reason for me buying it was that the refill pack is dirt cheap. £7/€8 for 2 sponges and 50 sheets is a bargain

I find the red grass so nice. I’ve literally left paints in it for 3 months before after upgrading to the XL and they were still wet. That seal is no joke, and the magnetic wavy palette on the side is useful for washes and metallics which just really helps my flow. Getting out and cleaning out a separate palette always just one more extra step.
That army painter one looks cool and the ability to store brushes seems really useful. Red grass for home Army painter for travel maybe for me.

Ya I have left paint in my red grass one for the summer and when i opened it up I would have been able to paint with most of the paint. I have never had the issue of that he talks about but I see he uses alot more water in his wet pallet then I do.

I have the STA-WET Palette and have been using it for a couple of years. If you're in the US you can buy the Reynolds Kitchen cookie baking sheets. They are pre-cut parchment paper that is folded so it makes 4 squares that are perfect for the palette.

When it come to using acrylics I am a neophite. But you were right about that parchment paper being better. The paper that came with the Masterson Pallet was way to thick. I ordered some parchment paper at Amazon and it is way better. I'm in the process of teaching myself how to paint faces with acrylics. i always used oils for the face before.

If you are going the home-made route, use your tupperware upside down so the lid is used as the palette. Gives you good low profile for painting.

I have the Sta-Wet and the Army Painter palettes. I personally like the Sta-Wet mostly because it keeps my paints wet for days, but cutting the parchment paper is just one more step needed to get painting and for me, that's an insanely big negative. I can't have a designated painting area because of space restrictions, and I need to do a fair bit of setup every single time I want to paint. Having to sit there with scissors, a ruler, and a pencil cutting a stack of palette papers is time I'm not using to actually do the hobby!

Army Painter's keeps paints wetter longer than if I'd just put them on a ceramic tile or something, but I've had paint dry out on it while painting; I just can't figure out how much water to use or not to use. I've had water sloshing around, I've had only the sponge mildly moist and everything in between but it's always the same. Or maybe it's the paper provided, I absolutely have no clue, but I'm essentially using it because convenience of just taking a sheet from the box, slapping it on and hoping I'm done with a colour before it dries up.

I have been using a Masterson Sta-Wet Super Pro, which I originally got to have an air-tight storage for my oil palette between sessions. It's way too big, honestly, but that's a minor thing most of the time.

I agree with you about their paper. You can tell it's meant to keep heavy body acrylics moist without making them runny. It will still keep your paints workable for hours but probably not the next day.

Thanks for your insight. I don't have a lot of brushes and I certainly don't paint as mush as you. So, I think I like the Army Painter one best for me. The brush storage means I can keep everything together.

I saw Marco's Ferrero Rocher video one day and, going into my local supermarket the next day, saw the exact same size FR chocolate boxes at 2-for-1. Happily stuffed with chocolate, I made a Marco FR wet palette - worked wonderfully.
3(4?) months later, I saw a local online supplier doing a special for the Army Painter wet palette and succumbed to 'official' wet palette envy. The internal lid that holds the brushes wasn't something that I was expecting so that was a very happy surprise.
That said, both work about the same, and the Army Painter box is more robust than a FR box, and it comes with precut paper.
In terms of price & convenience (you do have to cut the paper, but that just becomes a regular set-up activity), the FR wet palette can't be beaten, especially if you're new to the hobby... and if you're partial to chocolate.
So, if you're painting at home in the same place all the time 》Ferrero Rocher!
If you're taking your kit from place to place 》Army Painter.

The P3 sold me on wet palettes. It's useful as a stepping stone for those reluctant to make their own. But I've since moved on to the Sta-Wet and it's been my main WP for a few years now. I swear by it. Cannot paint without it.

I have been using the army painter wet palette for the good part of a year now and I really like it, it keeps my paints wet but not too much even over 3 days and the refill hydro packs are pretty cheap, also it comes with a neat second bottom where you can store tools and brushes..only negative for me is indeed the size, sometimes it gets a little crowded on the palette especially if Ia am working on a mini over a longer period or with a lot of colors

I got the P3 a couple of years ago, but the paper was worthless so I stopped using it. I thought all wet pallets were more or less the same. But after seeing this I definitely will give wet pallets another try.

I use these tupperware-esque trays meant for sliced meat. They usually come in three, stacked with one lid. So that's two trays for whatever and a wet palette for 5 to 10 bucks. They're not big, but neither is my crafting table.

I really prefer reynolds paper (parchment paper) vs redgrass paper, i tried to use redgrass palet because is so convenient the pre cut paper but in my experience reynolds paper hydrates paint a lot better.

Your choice of palettes to review were great. I own the Masterson, picked it up at a retail craft store. My sponge got mold, but only because I left it sitting with water for over a week. This is after months of use. It’s coming apart near the middle when I wash it, but only because I had to wash the mold off. I also have to cut my own paper, and I don’t mind it. I’m going to invest in an RGG version. I’m hoping the paint WONT separate overnight the way my Masterson unfortunately does. Other than the mold, and citadel paint separation after sitting overnight, it’s a great palette for the price🫰🏽

I used the mastersons for a few years until recently switching to the redgrass games ones; the reason was my mastersons sponges kept degrading and growing mold (even if copper in the bottom of the palette to discourage mold from growing). After I switched the sponge out for a new one for the seventh or eighth time I bit the bullet and get the redgrass games palette because the sponge is easier to wash without destroying it and because of it's anti-mold properties. I've been using it for a few months now and am super happy. I also got the bigger XL palette and I'm happier with the size for all my mixing needs.

For a home made palette, i started with using the box that came with my Army Painter Wash set. Worked great. A better solution is to buy a refill for the Army Painter wet palette. The plastic contained it comes in works perfectly as the wet palette. This is a great option if your local shop stocks those and you aren't sure if you want to pay for a full Wet Palette yet. The refill pack comes with papers, and sponge! If you decide to upgrade to an Army Painter palette, you already have refills!

Been using my DIY version made with a take out container, paper towel/ now sponge, and parchment paper, 8” x 10” working area. Works great only drawback, high sides about a inch. I guess when I get ready I’ll speed money or find a locking plastic container with low sides.

As a noob, I am SO glad to see that the Sta-wet palette's paper is actually the problem and its not how I'm using it. That paper has been frustrating me for so long and it had me really scratching my head as it did not seem to be keeping my paints wet like other people's palettes I see in videos (even when I followed the instructions and pre-soaked the paper in warm water).

I like using the Masterson Pallet/sponge + redgrass games small paper available at my local game store. Parchment paper that I've bought have a bit too much silicone in the coating that causes the paint to slide around. At my painting level I'm not very good at gauging paint consistency so using the more textured redgrass games paper really helps me check the flow of paint from my brush.

I use the Masterson myself, and really love it. The only other reason I would pick it over your favorite is if your painting space is smaller, a big pallet may be impractical. Great video as always. Thanks very much.

I find that I liked the wax paper more then parchment to protect my paints from getting too wet from underneath , but the moisture of the box overall was enough to keep my paints wet. I’ve had it mold before the moisture and paints dries up.

I love the Army Painter one. I like to paint at my local club (at least I did before Covid) and it's a perfect size for travelling. I wouldn't like it any smaller, but wouldn't fancy too much bigger either.
If you like big, though, have you looked at artists' wet palettes? I bought one on Amazon once without realising how big it was, and it was nearly A3 size. Had to send it back.

I know this is an older video but with the masters pallet ive found that if you use the raised area on the lid as a template for cutting the paper to fit it is easier.

If you're making your own, the brand Rosti Mepal have some good sandwich / storage boxes (like the Modula 550) that are quite low profile, and the one I have even has some ridging on the bottom which keeps the moisture level good by accident.

Here's a thought: if you get the small Masterson's, the Redgrass paper for their Painter size palette is only slightly smaller. So you could actually use the Redgrass paper in the Masterson's without having to trim it, though sacrificing about a half inch in width and an inch in height of surface area (So if you centered the paper, you'd have a quarter inch gap on either side and a half inch gap top and bottom). Best of both worlds?

When I bought the army painter one I saw a massive improvement compared to the DIY that I had... Maybe the parchment paper I was using was not good, but all my paints end up super watery in a matter of minutes. Now the AP one works as it should.

Few months ago i switched from home made wet-palette (based on cellulose sponge) to army painter one. At first i was happy with the change, it had lower walls, sponge was fitting nicely and papers were alredy cut. BUT after few times i let the sponge dry out (it was somehing i did with cellulose to prevent molding) and now the sponge no longer distributes water properly, paints in the middle of palette are drying. The fact that bottom of the palette is convex doesn't help either.

The RGG one is definitely beyond what I'm willing to spend. I made my own from a small sistema (tupperware-type) container and that has worked well so far. I'm interested in the Army Painter and Masterson ones too. I like the idea of one that lives in my "go box" for mobile use, and another larger one that is at my desk. Got myself a redgrass XL on 35% discount, and it's absolutely amazing, but your critique about the seals being too tight is definitely true. It is expensive, but I work at an Element Games, so it was a lot more affordable to me as a result.

With my friends bought Everlasting Palette in bundle from kickstarter some years ago so we cut the price in half (or more! With free paper refill).
Before that i was using a "free palette" and, well, the quality is noticeable better 😅
Besides i don't think palette is something you need to change frequently so a bit more price is not really a concern... And now i paint with a lot of contrast (on dry palette or straight from the pot)... (I'm lazy, you know... 😁)
PS i use around 1/10th of water you put in the palette 😱

I've been using the same homemade wet palette ever since I started miniature painting three and a half years ago. I ended up buying the small RedGrass Games wet palette just a few days ago. The size is no problem for me as I have limited desk space and have gotten used to painting with a small sandwich container-sized palette so even this small Red Grass one is larger than what I'm used to. Plus, even though it's completely irrelevant to painting, I do like the aesthetics of the Red Grass wet palettes the most.

I personally use the army painter, its the right size for my needs and comes with a ton of paper, also the elastic band I feel keeps the humidity just right for acrylic.

I've been using the Masterson Sta-Wet Palette for about a year now. The first few months were great, but right now it's developed a bit of a convex warp underneath. Basically I need to now keep some paper towel or something underneath or else the palette will spin like a top on the bottom surface. Not sure if there is a fix for this, but I've asked for a Redgrass Games Palette for a Christmas present so hopefully that one will have a bit more longevity.

I made myself a wet palette with tupperware. It worked great, but I had to stop using it because it encouraged procrastination. I kept telling myself the paint would still be good, so I went days without painting and by the time I got back, the paints had gotten too wet or the pigments separated. The dry palette I got isn't as convenient as a wet palette, but once I start, I have to commit to painting several models, so it helps my productivity.

Personally i use the masterson sta wet. Cutting parchment paper isnt a huge ordeal if you cut a large supply of the appropriate size. I have to leave it partially open due to the humidity of my state but i love having it.

I have been using the P3 one for years now and I agree. The paper is terrible and the sponge is not great, but I have a ton of the paper so I'm persevering for now. Also the size for me is challenging but it is perfect for storage when space is at a premium.
When that runs out not sure whether to upgrade or just get try the P3 with parchment paper. Who am I kidding... it'll be an upgrade.

Nice vid as always. I'd like to add just one thing: I have the XL Redgrass and I love her but its paper doesn't really work with some brands (for example Scale75 fantasy line). I replaced the paper with parchment and it works like a dream with any paint range I've tried so far

The wet palette move is RedGrass Orange, with Army painter replacement sheets. Enough room on the sides so the paper doesn't overlap, and you can keep it easily topped up with water.

I've made my own and used it for years. But at some point I've found your video where you showed the XL Red Grass one and decided to upgrade to that. And I'm quite happy about it, just still haven't got used to working with the paper (I'm probably not using enough water because the whole sheet just won't stick and rolls).

I recently upgraded to the Masterson from a homemade 3D printed wet pallet. The paper is awful, but the sponge was a massive upgrade from the shammy-cloth sponge I was previously using. It can hold a lot more water and is much nicer to work with. I don't get a dry film on the paint but that may be related to relative humidity.

If someone is on a budget I definitely agree they might get more mileage from just buying a Masterson sponge replacement pack and using it in their own wet-pallet, since the box doesn't really gain much from being fancy.

Thanks for this honest review! I had been using a Tupperware sandwich lid and parchment paper, but used paper towels soaked in water instead of a decent sponge thing which resulted in paint separation. I finally just caved. I really want the Red Grass XL, but decided on the Army Painter since my work area is tiny. It arrives in April. So excited!

Metal Bucheron chocolate boxes are ideal for home made wet pallete, slim and good-looking. Also it's almost airtight, so some water evaporates and you don't have water on the lid, but also it remains wet for weeks.

i made my first wet palette out of a pyrx dish i had laying around that was super flat and wide and i lined it with a washcloth and some paper towel with parchment paper and it worked great for so long!

The Ferrero Rocher box one is a great idea, I have one leftover from Christmas :), I had only been using the inserts to mix paint in but now I will use the box too. Thanks for posting the other guys use of it. I have been using a sandwich box with some paper towel and greaseproof paper in but it is a bit deep so the Ferrero box will be much better. I might invest in a thin sponge to replace the paper towel now, actually I think there are some in the kitchen cupboard :)

we have a small 3D-printer and printed our own wet-palette :) the files are free to download and the filament is really cheap so if you have access to a 3D printer i can really recommend it!

I really have gotten good results with the Sta-Wet paper when prepping it according to the instructions (crazy, I know). It’s an extra step and takes 20 minutes or so, but it makes all the difference. The paper lasts a long time after that since it can be rinsed off. The P3 wet palette has the worst sponge possible. It’s a piece of foam, not a sponge. I like the pads of paper available for it and use them with the Masterson for smaller projects. I typically work with a pretty limited color palette so I don’t place as much of a premium on mixing real estate.

Great video. I too use a Redgrass wet pallet. One thing I have found regarding the sealed in paint getting too wet between sessions is the washed out paint can be removed with a paper towel. If you use a gentle action the paint wants to stick to the towel more than the pallet leaving the paper surface intact for reuse. Of course it doesn't remove all the paint so it only works if you are painting off the same pallet of colours but on the plus side this helps matching the blends. It might seem obvious but a lot of my friends were in the habit of swapping paper each session which is fine if you want to but is very wasteful. I have kept paper in use over multiple sessions covering several weeks. Give it a try there is nothing to lose, because even if you damage the paper surface or have trouble removing the unwanted spoilt paint you were going to chuck the paper anyway.

Iv been using a home made wet pellet for about 5 years now, if been thinking about buying one but what iv got works fine. It was good to see your review on the different pallets, I think it will help me decide on which one I'll eventually buy.

I realized I had an embarrassing number of tiny cigar tins from my cigarillo habit (Drew Estate Sweet Janes and Undercrowns mostly) so I use them as little wet palettes with the ol' paper towel parchment paper method. They're about 4"x5" with a lid that is tight but allows water evaporation over a few days in case I forget about them. They're probably way too small for some people but they're a good size for me.

Masterson has multiple size of the palette. The one you showed is the small one. The premier palette is larger and has the same design.

A very nice review.You are right the Army painter is too small.The Masterson's paper is awful like blotting paper.I will try baking paper next.Not tried the Red grass so can't comment.The best by far is the Ferrero Rocher box and Spontex sponges with parchment.I think it is true don't spend a lot of money make your own which will be every bit as good.🐻🤗👍

AK Interactive makes a really nice wet palette, especially for painting away from home. It's small, inexpensive, snaps shut, and has an optional seal. I like it a little better than the Masterson, as it fits on my desk better, comes with better pre-cut paper, and has a neutral gray surface instead of yellow. The seal is a bit of mixed blessing: it's nice for travel, because you can pre-wet it without leaking, but it molds pretty easily unless you're very careful to keep it clean or dry between uses. It's a similar size to the Army Painter palette or maybe a bit smaller.

Good video Squidmar! Cheers from a fellow Swede! :) Honestly I don't get why people buy these so that's why I watched the video. I don't see the benfefit of a premade one. I use a small soap cup with low edges, have a dishcloth cut to size, and then add a paper used for separating sandwiches in food boxes. That said, the use of a wet palette is the thing that has helped me improve my painting, by far.

You should try Magic Eraser style sponges in that container, once they're full of water they'll get almost to the top and as long as you have parchment over the sponge there's no risk of damaging your brushes from the abrasive in the sponge's surface. I switched from a commercial palette to a magic eraser sponge home-made palette because my paint was just drying out too fast. It can be a bit of a problem to move around sometimes (it's heavy) but it's been a really good cheap option for me.

I use a sta-Wet palette and I have been thinking I was using it wrong now I know it's the paper it came with. Thanks Emil you saved me from buying a new palette, now I just need to figure out how to get the citadel paints out of the pots without wasting a bunch.

I use the craft acrylics for larger pieces, so the Masterson seems to be good, but I do like the recommendation for parchment papers when I switch to the miniature paints.

I've been using my own diy wet palette. It's an old Tupperware container with a sham wow as the sponge, and parchment paper.

Obviously it's not the best but it got me started and I didn't have to buy anything as I had all the parts around the house. But I will be purchasing a dedicated wet palette.

I have the Masterson Sta-Wet, I have used it twice now. Both times I have let the paint stay in there for some time. The paint got moldy (although I have old acrylic Utretch artist grade paint, so since it is old that might be a factor) and the sponge got a swampy smell. I really didnt enjoy the smell while I was painting. So I cleaned it and havent set it back up. Normally if I'm going to sit down to paint a miniature I paint it in one sitting, otherwise they sit half painted for a while. I use regular parchment paper and slow drying medium if I'm going to be painting for a while.

I tried the STA one the other day with kitchen parchment paper and the paints dried nearly immediately. My homemade one with paper towels, tuperware, and parchment paper outperformed it a million times over.

I was just wondering why you do not use the original paper that comes with the Masterson Sta-Wet. It is thicker than waxed paper, but needs to soak in hot water before use. It does not curl, however. Daler Rowney and Interactive Acrylics also have different palettes. Masterson has some really large ones too, but getting expensive to buy due to shipping.

i received a redgrass games wet palette (and handle) as a gift, didn't realize they were so pricey but damn do i love it. got three packs of the papers and i have had no issue with it, as long as like you said you crack open the container if you are gonna leave it be for longer periods of times.

I actually use some box that is meant to be used for cheese and wurst for breakfast here in Germany. They are not very high, you can buy them with different hight and stack them. So I have one stack for colors, brushes and wet palettes, which is ideal for the space I have.

I like my red grass but I bought it because I couldnt find the masterssons, but I did buy the smaller one since its larger than my homemade. I found a very low tupperware and I strongly recommend sandwhich paper instead of parchment (butter paper??) Much better moist to paint (believe Miniac mentioned it as well). But that said I have had far less issues with paints breaking apart in red grass but on that note, they sell the moist-pad and paper seperatly so ... find a good container and usung those is probably the best recommendation from my side.

I've got the green stuff world wet pallet and I love it, little bit on the small side but it keeps the paint prefect for me.

I just started painting again after not doing it for almost 30 years....yup...Battletech back in high school...lol. Everyone said to get a wet pallet and I went for two of the Masterson's and I LOVE them. I have access to Tupperware and used that at first to get used to it, but I cannot understate how nice it is to have two dedicated wet pallets, I got the curved tip water bottles to keep them hydrated, and I have an old-style paper cutter so I can cut like ten sheets of parchment paper at a time and it doesn't bug me much. Love the vids man, keep them coming!

for the wax paper, use a putty knife and scrap on a flat surface befor cutting your pieces out. Works fine for me.

I've been using the (small, orange) Redgrass wet palette for a couple of years and I'm extremely happy with it. Closing it has not been an issue - just put less water in it. The sponge is working very well. I keep it wet, but not much free water around it.

Sure, the price could be an issue for many, but given the high quality and what we pay for paints, brushes, paint stations and above all miniatures/games it's worth it.

Being relatively new to painting miniatures, I had to learn that this hobby is not one of the cheapest anyway. And sure, at the moment, this palette costs 25 Euro, but this is something you will have for a long time, so this is relative.

I have a Masterson, and the plastic tray is rather thin, and warps a bit when it’s lidless. I think the sturdiness of the RGG is a plus 🫰🏽

I started with mastersons, switched to scale 75. The mastersons worked much better , the scale 75 dries my paints out even though I doubled up on the sponge

I know it’s really small but a kid that used to come into my hobby store used an old GW grass tuft box and made a wet pallet out of it. It’s a place to start for some.
