In 2013, rural-born brothers Dave and Aiden McMillian traded the sun-drenched plains of northern New South Wales for the rich, cultural tapestry — and comparatively dreary weather — of Melbourne. 2015 sees the two siblings (alongside Andre Franco on bass) continue to draw influence from their provenance in Redspencer.
Latest single ‘Happy Slow Riverbends’ is a hark back to the band’s humble beginnings, evoking images of balmy, mid-summer drives along the coast with the windows down. Channeling the trademark nonchalance of ‘90s cult-classics Yo La Tengo, the three-piece go about their music armed with jangly guitars and vocals packed with warmth and charm, rousing comparisons to the likes of Deerhunter and Spoon.
Their self-titled debut EP is out now via Deaf Ambitions.

Nothing to fear
I'm in no hurry
Just changing hemispheres
'Cause everybody dies
But I'm not really scared, 'cause that seems miles away
I wanna go out tonight
When things get blurry
I'm thinking clear
Just smoking durries
And sinking a little beer
'Cause sometimes it feels like life's a shitty sport that we're forced to play
You woke up on the field one day not knowing what to do
There's nothing to compare it to and you won't find the answers on the evening news
When you got the blues
I'm telling you
I'm telling you
I'm telling you
Sitting alone in silence
Keeping you up all night
Weighing it up in my head
It's anything but light
'Cause everybody dies, closes up their eyes and just flies away
No matter how hard they try
Everybody dies but I'm not gonna cry to get it my own way
I wanna go out tonight
I'm burning bright
The lyrics of Redspencer’s G Talk demonstrate a sense of disillusionment and acceptance about life’s uncertainties. The opening lines, “No need to worry; Nothing to fear; I'm in no hurry; Just changing hemispheres” suggest the singer is embarking on a new phase of life, and is not afraid to do so. The mention of changing hemispheres shows a significant change, potentially moving from one country to another. The lines “ everybody dies, but I'm not really scared, 'cause that seems miles away” demonstrates that the singer has come to terms with mortality- they are aware that they will not live forever, but this awareness does not scare them.
The next verse “when things get blurry; I'm thinking clear; Just smoking durries and sinking a little beer” shows the singer finding clarity and peace amidst the chaos of life. They seem to have found solace in substance use. The lines “sometimes it feels like life's a shitty sport that we're forced to play; You woke up on the field one day not knowing what to do; There's nothing to compare it to and you won't find the answers on the evening news; When you got the blues,” reflect a sense of hopelessness with life- the singer feels as though they have been thrust into a situation they cannot change and they are unable to find answers in conventional methods. However, in the refrain “I'm telling you; I'm telling you; I'm telling you,” they seem to be urging someone to listen to their thoughts about life.
In the final verse, “Sitting alone in silence; Keeping you up all night; Weighing it up in my head; It's anything but light,” the tone seems to be more contemplative- the singer is deep in thought, introspecting about life’s realities. The lines “ No matter how hard they try; Everybody dies but I'm not gonna cry to get it my own way” suggest a defiance against the inevitable end- they refuse to live a life of fear or regret. The song concludes with the refrain “I wanna go out tonight; I'm burning bright” indicating a desire to live life fully and joyfully, despite its uncertainties.

Too beautiful to be ignored, so nostalgic, ready to be listened at sunset remembering gone faces...words from the past that lasts...a song to welcome the tears. THANKS!
