Starlight
Reed Lou & John Cale Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Starlight open wide, starlight open up your door
This is New York calling with movies from the street
Movies with real people, what you get is what you see
Starlight open wide, Andy's Cecil B. DeMille
Come on L. A. give us a call
We've got superstars who talk, they'll do anything at all
Ingrid, Viva, Little Joe, Baby Jane, and Edie S.
But you better call us soon before we talk ourselves to death
Starlight open wide everybody is a star
Split screen 8-hour movies
We've got color we've got sound
Won't you recognize us, we're everything you hate
Andy loves old Hollywood movies, he'll scare you hypocrites
to death
You know that shooting up's for real
That person who's screaming, that's the way he really feels
We're all improvising, five movies in a week
If Hollywood doesn't call us - we'll be sick
Starlight open wide
Do to movies what you did to art
Can you see beauty in ugliness, or is it playing in the dirt
There are stars out on the New York streets
We want to capture them on film
But if no one wants to see them
We'll make another and another
Starlight let us in that magic room
We've all dreamt of Hollywood, it can't happen too soon
Won't you give us a million dollars the rent is due

Andy will give you 2 movies and a painting
Starlight open wide!

Overall Meaning

The song "Starlight" by Reed Lou & John Cale is a tribute to the avant-garde filmmaker Andy Warhol and his motley crew of performers who made up the Factory scene of the late 60s. The first verse of the song speaks directly to Warhol urging him to use his star-making power to open the doors of Hollywood to the unconventional performers of his Factory troupe, including Ingrid, Viva, Little Joe, Baby Jane, and Edie Sedgwick. However, the song is less about seeking fame and more about capturing life as it is lived in the streets of New York City, with its gritty realism and raw emotions. The lyrics convey the message that although these performers might not fit the conventional mold of Hollywood stars, they are just as deserving of recognition and admiration.

The second verse of the song continues to champion the idea that everyone is a star, and suggests that movies can be created just like art is created, by capturing beauty in ugliness and dirt. The song expresses the idea that the Factory scene is a gathering of artists who are improvising and creating movies out of the everyday lives of people on the streets. The song asks Hollywood to give them a chance to show the world that their style of filmmaking is valid and worth recognition.

Overall, "Starlight" is a song that celebrates the unconventional performers of the Factory scene and their unique style of filmmaking. It champions the idea that everyone is a star and that beauty can be found in the most unlikely places.
