Summerholidays vs. Punkroutine
Refused Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm tired of losing myself to some stupid childhood dream
Of what I could have been
Money proves the point and
I'm stuck between summer holidays and punk routine
I shoot off a 100 things to remain more sorry than safe you see
I only get this chance once and I just can't let it be

And I'm still certain that what motivates me is more rewarding
Than any piece of paper could be
Well adjusted and corrupt, all those icons that stole our teenage lust

A scenario of simplicity, a scenario of you and me
A scenario of simplicity, a scenario of you and me

Rather be forgotten than remembered for giving in

We're all tired of dying so sick of not trying

Scared that we might fail we'll accomplish nothing
Not even failure

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Refused’s song “Summerholidays vs. Punkroutine” discuss the struggle between living a carefree lifestyle and conforming to societal norms. The lyrics express the singer’s exhaustion with his childhood dreams and his desire to live a fulfilling life. He is torn between the idea of enjoying the summer holidays and following the routine of adulthood. He shoots off a hundred things to remain more sorry than safe, indicating that he would rather take risks than play it safe. He can’t let this chance pass him by because he is certain that what motivates him is more rewarding than any piece of paper could be.

The singer detests the icons that stole teenage lust, representing the idea that society is promoting false idols that lead people away from achieving their true goals. He imagines a scenario of simplicity between himself and others, where they can all just be themselves and not have to worry about societal pressures. He’d rather be forgotten than remembered for giving in, meaning he doesn’t want to conform to society’s rules and regulations. The last two lines of the lyrics show that people are tired of not trying and scared to fail. They are afraid they will accomplish nothing, not even failure, intended to inspire listeners to take chances and strive for greatness.

Wow, what a blast from the past! Such an amazing, talented, and influential band. I haven't listened to this band in 6-7 years and I'm still blown away by their sound and lyrics. They were ahead of their time musically, and many of their messages and warnings have come true. Just like the refused, rebellion and revolution of the capitalistic world is fuckin' dead.
