@@michael69040 Yes, indeed. Without the blues and the jump boogie/blues style that developed in the late 40's, there is no rock and roll. Louis Jordan was laying it down a good ten years before Bill Haley and Elvis got hold of it.

I am now 89. I played Trumpet 2 in a 12 piece 'dance band' of that era. Manhatten Spiritual always got the dancers going! I remember the section where the brass join in the riff raising the tune a third on each repeat. Trumpet 1 gets up to top D, Trumpet 2 to B flat.
I was then 26 tears old. I have been playing drums in pit orchestras and bands all my life. Mixed feelings when I hear this. Elation when I remember those carefree times when swing was king, sadness that they ended.

As a 22 year old, I wish this was the generation of music I grew up to, I would love to jam out to this instead of my generation of music, I loved the dances from then also, the wah tusi, the stroll, the swing dancing, just all of it!

We danced to this at our high school mixers where records were played. Whenever I hear this the vision of the hall full of teens bouncing around comes to mind.
When I began collecting records in the early 60s this was soon on the list.

I see the similarities between this and the John Lewis composition. The recording levels are really hot and distorted, but oh does this sound great. I was about five yrs. when this was on the radio. You could still rock and roll to it.

Billy Maxted, the composer of Manhattan Spiritual, was an extraordinarily versatile musician who played with many different bands and incidentally arranged some of Claude Thornhill's hits. As this instrumental demonstrates, the 1950s were far more versatile than Elvis and rock n' roll, and this record was a big hit with teenagers in 1959.

From what I read, England didn't want to issue this record, so Reg had to go to the USA and issue it on a small label...then England noticed when it sold copies.

Palette was a Belgian Record label that had a US outlet , so Reg may have recorded it in Europe and leased it to Belgium on the European based Palette label, the the US-based label issued it for the US market. It became US Palette's only Top 40 hit as a result. Reg had recordings issued on RCA Victor in the US before "Manhattan Spiritual", but the "Manhattan " record was the one that sold a million for a relatively small label
