Tender singing of the aria (tenderer than Melba's), with gorgeous floated high notes. Her words in the cabaletta are an apocalypse, but the notes themselves fly out with plenty of brio and an attractive timbre. Too bad she didn't work out the text. This is a very well sung version of this indeed.

That's a really amusing anecdote, for sure!! I bet MELBA would have *RELISHED* that in particular, because she apparently went out of her way to prevent Alda from becoming a superstar.

No matter... check out her other posts here and elsewhere on YouTube. Though she's a fine, fine singer, no one has ever thought of ranking her with such Red Seal artists as Melba, Tetrazzini, Galli-Curci, Alda, etc. Cheers. Doug --

Is it me or the singing technique that old opera singers used is different from the one used nowadays? I've been listening to quite a lot of very old recordings and I've noticed a major difference between the voice, technique and style of the old opera singers and the contemporary ones. I think both are great, but a lot of the good things that were taught in those times are not taught anymore to new singers and that's why opera is decaying. Fortunately we still have great opera singers with an amazing technique and thanks to them opera is still alive.

Interesting observations, of which I agree entirely. While other listeners are better equipped to describe in detail said differences, admit to being more comfortable with the singers, the artistry of the past (c.1895 - c.1955). I just listened to her version of the Italian Street Song - no complaints there, obviously, since it's in English. And yes, of course she couldn't be ranked among Melba, Tetrazzini, Galli-Curci and Alba for the simple reason that she was only a singer/recording artist and not someone who actually portrayed operatic roles. I guess if she wanted to, she could have - with a voice like hers - if she underwent the requisite training.

Interestingly, comically, another story, this concerning soprano Frances Alda rehearsing before Arturo Toscanini for the role of "Louise." Tosanini listened in silence as she sang in French (other stories say Italian). The Maestro, disturbed, asked asked "In WHAT language were you singing?"

Alda, another really wonderful singer, was married to Met general manager Giulio Gatti-Casazza, and don't think Melba would have, could have succeeded.

No wonder Melba seemed to have all but renounced the Met, and kept referring to Covent Garden as her artistic home. lol. I guess she succeeded in the long run in the sense that Alda didn't become legendary the way Melba and Tettrazini did - but it definitely would have bothered her at the time, that Alda was indelibly connected with the Met. I believe at one point she went so far as to say: "It's either Alda or Melba", in typical Melba fashion.

Actually, no one really looks to Lucy's operatic recordings. Critic and discographer Aida Favia-Artsay was quick to note that constitionally, temperamentally, opera was not her forte.

Melba did not use this condensed arrangement, though Tetrazzini did. Tetrazzini had earlier recorded both arias as sepatate discs

Well, we definitely know that her voice teacher(s) did NOT stress the importance of text and diction - because we can hear it/the lack thereof on her operatic recordings. lol. But what do you mean "If you could... care to give us a few lessons? SING!"?

Not what I would technically, legally describe as a rip off. Sources point out that Victor executives requested Marsh to study Melba's recording before commiting her own version to disc. And for the record, Lucy Marsh, who made numerous solo, duet and ensemble recordings for Victor's lower priced Black, Blue and Purple Labels, never appeared in opera.

I didn't mean rip-off in the technical/legal sense - but it's all too obvious that she was copying Melba!! I guess I can't "blame" the Victor executives, since Melba's recordings with them were such a success. And I know that Lucy never actually played any operatic roles on stage - I was saying that no one should even SING anything operatic unless they understand that the TEXT is as important as the music to do justice to the work. It's a pity her voice teacher didn't stress that.

She sings well. This is one of the pieces she probably learned with her teacher. The Ah, fors'e lui is quite nice. The Sempre libera is well sung even though she stops singing the words. Her Italian pronunciation is awful. As Donizetti once remarked when talking about the first L'elisir d'amore soprano..."Only she knows what she is saying!"

She has a gorgeous voice - exquisite even, at certain points - but it really really annoys me when singers think that opera is ALL about the NOTES, and that the WORDS ARE *INCONSEQUENTIAL*. Nothing could be further from the truth!! Opera is Music AND Drama at its finest - and a singer who can't be bothered with the text shouldn't be singing opera at all! Not to mention the fact that his is a *COMPLETE RIP OFF* of Melba's version of the piece.........
