After self-releasing her first three records and gaining popularity in New York City's independent music scenes, particularly the anti-folk scene centered on New York City's East Village, Spektor signed with Sire Records in 2004 and began achieving greater mainstream recognition. After giving her third album a major label re-release, Sire released Spektor's fourth album, Begin to Hope, which achieved a Gold certification by the RIAA. Her following two albums, Far and What We Saw from the Cheap Seats, each debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200. 2016's Remember Us to Life peaked at 23 on the Billboard 200.
Mayor Bill de Blasio proclaimed June 11, 2019, Regina Spektor Day in New York City. Spektor was also inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame on May 18, 2019, by Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr.

Jessica, wake up
It's February again, we must get older, so wake up
I can't write a song for you
I'm out of melodies
I can't write a song for you
But I am asking please, Jessica, wake up
It's February again
It's February again, we must get older, now, so please wake up
We must get older now, so please wake up
The lyrics of Regina Spektor's "Jessica" reflect the feeling of being stuck in time, unable to move forward or progress in life. The repetition of "Jessica, wake up" represents a call to action, a plea to snap out of this stagnant state and face the reality of growing older. The line "I can't write a song for you, I'm out of melodies" symbolizes a creative block, unable to express the emotions felt towards this unchanging situation. The repetition of "We must get older now" highlights the inevitability of aging and the need to push forward, to not remain stagnant in one place.
"Jessica" is a song that resonates with many people who feel stuck in their lives, unable to move forward, but at the same time, it also conveys a sense of hope, that there is still time left to create change and progress.
