Lacrimosa
Regina Spektor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We keep on burying our dead
We keep on planting their bones in the ground
But they won't grow
The sun doesn't help
The rain doesn't help

If my garden would have a fence
Then the rabbits couldn't just come in
And sit on the grass
And eat all the flowers
And shit

Hi, I'm Icarus, I'm falling
Down, man for judgment must prepare me
Spare, oh god, in mercy spare me

Man, I have a terrible feeling
That something's gone awful, very wrong with the world
Is it something we made?
Is it something we ate?
Is it something we drank?

Hi, I'm Icarus, I'm falling
From the dust of earth returning
Man for judgment must prepare me
Spare, oh god, in mercy spare me

Lacrimosa

We keep on burying our dead
We keep on planting their bones in the ground
But they won't grow
The sun doesn't help
And all we've got
Is a giant crop
Of names and dates

Hi, I'm Icarus, I'm falling
Down on this day of tears and mourning
From the dust of earth returning
Man for judgment must prepare me
Spare, oh god, in mercy spare me

Lacrimosa

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Regina Spektor's song "Lacrimosa" are riddled with metaphorical representations of life and death. In the first verse, the idea of burying the dead is repeated, but the message is that despite our efforts to plant the bones back in the ground and expect life to magically rise out of it, it is not happening. The sun and rain are two elements of nature that are supposed to help life flourish, but even they are not helping. The metaphor emits a sense of futility and despair that death is not something that can be undone.

In the second verse, Regina Spektor presents herself as Icarus and references his tragic fall from the sky in Greek mythology, suggesting that death can come in different forms, from a fall or judgment. The lyric conveys a sense of fear or apprehension that something is not right with the world, but it is not clear what it is. The third verse repeats the first verse with the addition of mentioning the giant crop of names and dates, implying that all that is left of our dead is nothing more than mere records of their existence.

Overall, Lacrimosa is a song that reflects an acceptance of the inevitability of death and portrays it as a source of discomfort for the living. The use of Icarus, a tragic hero in Greek mythology, implies that death can come in different forms, sudden and unexpected, or as a gradual process. The lyrics of the song encourage the listener to reflect on life, the cycle of living and dying, and to consider the significance of their existence.

Line by Line Meaning

We keep on burying our dead
Despite the fact that we are aware of our mortality, we continue to mourn our deceased loved ones and pay our last respects by interring their bodies underground.

We keep on planting their bones in the ground
As a way of commemorating the legacy of the departed, we maintain the tradition of wearing threads of their clothes or burying their remains in the soil, believing that a part of their spirit will reside and flourish there.

But they won't grow
Although we expect the dead to have a physical presence in the earth, we know, deep inside, they won't grow and continue to thrive, that life without them may feel lackluster at times.

The sun doesn't help
Even though the sun emits solar energy that can fuel life on earth, it cannot reverse the inevitable law of nature that states that everything that lives must die; It does not prevent our loved ones from resting in peace or protect us from the pain of losing them forever.

The rain doesn't help
Rain is associated with the first signs of new growth and renewal, and it is believed to restore the natural balance of life. Still, in the context of life, it fails to resurrect someone back from the dead or wash away the sorrow of mourning.

If my garden would have a fence
If we could isolate and protect our most prized possessions or loved ones from the perils of this world or keep them contained and protected within the behest of our emotions, wouldn't that be a comfort?

Then the rabbits couldn't just come in
Rabbits suddenly entering our garden exposes the fragility of our protection mechanisms; we can't do anything but watch them eat our flowers and tarnish our emotions with their 'shadow.'

And sit on the grass
The rabbits sit on the grass as if it is no big deal to disturb our peace, to eat the plants we've tended to for years or decades, reminding us that this world is beyond our control.

And eat all the flowers
When someone or something we have sacrificed our time, resources, or emotions for is taken from us, it feels as if they've eaten our flowers, as if it is a theft that we cannot stop.

And shit
In this sense, the rabbits defecating on our ground is a metaphor for the scars that people leave on us when they leave - an insult that reminds us of our emotions that we can't let go of.

Hi, I'm Icarus, I'm falling
Through Icarus, the singer reveals her awareness of being on the verge of a disastrous emotional threshold, falling at such a high alarming rate to a point of no return, eventually leading to a severe emotional breakdown or loss.

Down, man for judgment must prepare me
As the artist considers the final moments of her downward spiral, she wonders if there is an impending judgment waiting for her at the end of it all that she must accept and prepare for.

Spare, oh god, in mercy spare me
The singer is pleading for mercy from what is to come, begging for a reprieve from the punishment she feels is unfurled upon her due to her mistakes that she's made.

Man, I have a terrible feeling
The singer shares that she is engulfed by a premonition of imminent danger, a realization that something has gone drastically wrong with the world, and that we are all signs of the decimation it may have created.

That something's gone awful, very wrong with the world
The singer believes that the implications of the bad things that have occurred within the world will impact everyone, transforming it into an alien place that we will never recognize again.

Is it something we made?
The artist wonders whether the destruction of the world was a consequence of human action, whether our decisions or perceptions have irrevocably damaged the world or lives of someone else.

Is it something we ate?
She seems to imply that the problems the world is facing right now could be traced back to what humanity has consumed or brought into their systems, like pollution or greed, affecting everyone.

Is it something we drank?
Consequently, the singer also considers whether substance abuse or addiction might lead to negative consequences that we are currently dealing with that will impact the world greatly.

And all we've got
The singer reflects the realities of life as one of the only things that we can take with us is memories, thoughts, and emotions that we pull out from ourselves.

Is a giant crop
The artist references inherited grief, an enormous memory of those we have loved that we carry with us, often in the form of images, such as names and dates.

Of names and dates
The significance in remembering those we cared about of name and dates that we commemorate are symbolic of our struggles to remember those who altered our own lives by sacrificing their own.

Down on this day of tears and mourning
The artist is once again coming back to the elegiac moment at hand; acknowledging the grief, weeping, and sorrow of the day of mourning for her dearly departed, Icarus.

Lacrimosa
Lacrimosa, a Latin term meaning 'weeping,' is an expression of sadness and pain in this song's context, attributing to the melancholic sounds of a Mass for the Dead, the realisation that death has claimed those we have loved.

Nós continuamos enterrando nossos mortos
We keep on burying our dead

Continuamos plantando seus ossos no chão
We keep on planting their bones in the ground

Mas eles não vão crescer
But they won't grow

O sol não ajuda
The sun doesn't help

A chuva não ajuda
The rain doesn't help

Se meu jardim tivesse uma cerca
If my garden would have a fence

Então os coelhos não podiam simplesmente entrar
Then the rabbits couldn't just come in

E sente-se na grama
And sit on the grass

E comer todas as flores
And eat all the flowers

E merda
And shit

Oi, eu sou Ícaro, eu estou caindo
Hi, I'm Icarus, I'm falling

Abaixo, o homem para julgamento deve me preparar
Down, man for judgment must prepare me

Poupe, oh Deus, em misericórdia me poupe
Spare, oh god, in mercy spare me

Cara, eu tenho um sentimento terrível
Man, I have a terrible feeling

Que algo deu errado, muito errado com o mundo
That something's gone awful, very wrong with the world

É algo que fizemos?
Is it something we made?

É algo que comemos?
Is it something we ate?

É algo que bebemos?
Is it something we drank?

Oi, eu sou Ícaro, eu estou caindo
Hi, I'm Icarus, I'm falling

Do pó da terra retornando
From the dust of earth returning

O homem para julgamento deve me preparar
Man for judgment must prepare me

Poupe, oh Deus, em misericórdia me poupe
Spare, oh god, in mercy spare me

E tudo o que temos
And all we've got

É uma colheita gigante
Is a giant crop

De nomes e datas
Of names and dates

Oi, eu sou Ícaro, eu estou caindo
Hi, I'm Icarus, I'm falling

Neste dia de lágrimas e luto
Down on this day of tears and mourning

Do pó da terra retornando

She's the only artist I've heard that isn't afraid to sound strange, because it's her. She expresses herself better than anyone I've ever listened to. Awesome lyrics, awesome piano, awesome voice. Beautiful.

Nathan Noetzold

Try Joanna Newsom too. She's awesome.

KHnaruto29

I really enjoy her references to Greek mythology. Icarus was giving wings made of wax and feathers by his father, but he ignored his instructions to not fly to close to the sun an the wings melted. He fell into the ocean and drowned. I don't think most people realize just how dark this woman's work is. It's hauntingly amazing.

Lindsey Skidmore

She is definitely my favorite artist. She expresses herself so well... I'm seriously awe struck by her raw talent and self expression. There's so much i want to say, but when it comes to Regina Spektor, I'm speechless.

Vika Nunez

More people should know about her!
(I'm spreading the love with a t-shirt)
I only know 3 people who have heard of her: My friend, her older sister, and my awesome R.E (ugh R.E) teacher! i found her via my magical favourite t-shirt with ReSpekt on. That means respect in german, and Re (gina) Spekt (or) must be very language-savvy to know that, as well as french and a few others.

Lindsey Skidmore

I think she is fantastic!! And I love all of her puns!

This is one of the songs that made me head over heels for Regina. Her imagery is insanely good, you can't help be moved to passionate desperation while you sing along.
