My Man
Regina Spektor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My man don't treat me right
Don't kiss me sweet goodnight
Don't buy me flowers to smell
Why he's a rotten boy from hell?

My man don't treat me good
He eats all my food
And he leaves me such a mess
They say I'm cursed but I am blessed

'Cause he loves me, he loves me, he really, really loves me
And his eyes are bluer then the bluest sky above the city
He don't agree but what a pity
He love me yes he does

My man don't treat me sweet
He walks the empty streets
And he drinks and smokes and swears
And they say he doesn't care

My man, he breaks my heart
He tears me all apart
And he leaves me such a mess
They say I'm cured but I am blessed

'Cause he loves me, he loves me, he really, really loves me
And his eyes are bluer then the bluest sky above the city
He don't agree but what a pity
He love me yes he does

Oh, my man, I love him so, he?ll never know
All my life is just despair but I don't care
When he takes me in his arms
The world is bright, alright

What's the difference if I say, "I'll go away?"
When I know ill come back on my knees someday

For whatever my man is
I'm his, forever more

Overall Meaning

Regina Spektor's song "My Man" tells the story of a woman in a relationship with a man who may not treat her right, but who she loves deeply. She describes how he doesn't kiss her goodnight, buy her flowers or treat her sweetly. He eats all her food and leaves her in a mess, yet she still feels blessed to be with him because he loves her truly. The narrative suggests that her love for him outweighs his bad behavior towards her, and the song ends with her acknowledging that she will always belong to him, even if he may not be the best to her.

I just saw Regina SPecktor in Ithaca, NY last night and she rocked my socks off!!!

@HelloKittykat21

Still loving this version ❤️

@barhanita

Again, she is not covering Billy Holiday! The song was first popularized by Mistinguett in France. Billy's version is Jazz, and the original is foxtrot. The first singer to sing it English was Fanny Brice (she also stepped a bit away from classic foxtrot version). So you can call it Mistinquett's or Fanny Brice's cover. The most amazing thing, that Regina is doing classic foxtrot version, and I love it.

Thank you! Your 100 correct and thanks for that! Also Edith piaf did a cover but even she said supposedly that it wasn't right for her 😮..she had respect for her fellow artists
