After self-releasing her first three records and gaining popularity in New York City's independent music scenes, particularly the anti-folk scene centered on New York City's East Village, Spektor signed with Sire Records in 2004 and began achieving greater mainstream recognition. After giving her third album a major label re-release, Sire released Spektor's fourth album, Begin to Hope, which achieved a Gold certification by the RIAA. Her following two albums, Far and What We Saw from the Cheap Seats, each debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200. 2016's Remember Us to Life peaked at 23 on the Billboard 200.
Mayor Bill de Blasio proclaimed June 11, 2019, Regina Spektor Day in New York City. Spektor was also inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame on May 18, 2019, by Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr.
Patron Saint
Regina Spektor Lyrics

Who'll smash herself down
In the night
She's the kind of girl
Who'll fracture her mind
Till it's light
She'll break her own
Heart
Know
That she'll break your heart too
So darling, let go of her hand
She's been skipping days
Spilling her drinks in the sink
And you know
She never coming home
Never coming home
A-Again
But when, when, when
She open her eyes, eyes, eyes
Beyond the
Chipping paint through the windowpane
Lies, lies, lies
Her patron saint
Broken and lame
And absolutely insane
For learning
That true love
Exists
So darling, let go of her hand
Let go of her hand
Let go of her hand
Let go of her hand
Let go of her hand
Let go of her hand
Let go of her hand
You'll be to blame
For playing this game
And learning
That true love
Exists
She's the kind of girl
Who'll smash herself down
In the night
She the kind of girl
Who'll fracture her mind
Till it's light
She'll break her own heart
And you
Know
That she'll break your heart too
So darling, let go of her hand
Darling, let go of her hand
You'll
Be to blame
For
Playing this game
And learning
That true love
Exists
Broken and lame
And knowing
That true love
Exists
The pain, the pain, the pain
Of knowing
That true love
Exists
Doo, doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo, doo-doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
Ah-da-da, ah-ah
Ah-da-da, ah-ah
The song Patron Saint by Regina Spektor is a powerful and emotional piece about a girl who is struggling with her own demons and heartbreak. The girl is represented as a tragic figure who will do anything to forget her heartache, but the memory of true love keeps haunting her. In the first verse, the girl is described as someone who will hurt herself emotionally and physically, as well as the people around her. The singer expresses that the girl is not capable of being in a relationship because of her own self-destruction. The chorus then repeats the advice to let go of her hand to avoid being hurt by her.
The second verse has a more somber tone, as the girl is depicted as being lost and hopeless. The imagery of her skipping days and spilling her drinks highlights her recklessness and disregard for her own well-being. The phrase "never coming home again" implies that the girl has left everything behind and is in a state of solitude. However, in the bridge, it is revealed that the girl still has hope for true love, despite her past failures. The patron saint, who is described as broken and insane, inspires her to believe in true love once again. The song ends with a repetition of the advice to let go of the girl's hand, highlighting the importance of self-preservation.
Overall, the song is a powerful message of self-care and stepping away from toxic relationships. The lyrics are full of emotion and use vivid imagery and metaphors to create a sense of despair and redemption.
