Stay With Me Baby
Reid Terry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where did you go when things went wrong now baby
Who did you run to and find a shoulder to lay your head upon

Baby, wasn't I there
Didn't I take good care of you
Oh no, I can't believe you're leaving me

Stay with me baby
Stay with me baby
Stay with me baby I can't go on

Who did you trust when you needed tenderness
I gave you so much and in return I found happiness

Baby, what did I do
Maybe, I was too good to you
Oh no, I can't believe you're leaving me

Remember, you said you'd never, never leave me
Remember, you said you're always gonna need me
Remember, remember
I'm askin' ya, beggin' ya, please, please

Stay with me baby

Stay with me baby
Stay with me baby I can't go on

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Reid Terry's song "Stay With Me Baby" are a plea from the singer to their lover to stay with them. The lyrics suggest that the couple has gone through some hard times, but the singer has been there for their partner throughout it all. The chorus, which is repeated several times throughout the song, serves as a plea for their partner to stay with them because the singer simply cannot go on without them.

The first verse begins with a question, asking their partner where they went when things went wrong. The singer knows that their partner has found someone else to lean on, but the question implies that their partner should have come to them instead. The second verse is more of a reflection on the relationship, with the singer asking their partner what they did wrong. The singer believes that they gave their partner everything they needed, making it hard to understand why they are leaving.

The chorus serves as the heart of the song, with the singer begging their partner to stay with them. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the desperation in the singer's voice, making it clear that they truly cannot go on without their partner. The bridge of the song repeats the words "remember" several times, implying that the couple has made promises to each other in the past that they need to keep.

In conclusion, "Stay With Me Baby" is a powerful love song that emphasizes the pain of a breakup and the importance of staying together through the hard times. The lyrics highlight the connection between the singer and their partner, making it clear that they belong together.

Where did you go
When things went wrong, baby
Who did you turn to
To find a shoulder to lay your head upon
Oh Baby, wasn't I there
Didn't I take good care of you
Oh no, can't believe, you're leaving me

Stay with me, baby
Stay with me, baby
Stay with me, baby
I can't go on this way

Who am I to rule the pride
Of someone else's heart, baby
Didn't I give you everything
But in return for a memory
I know I was there
Though I didn't say a thing about taking care of you
So, don't you know, you believe
I need it, T -- (T as in Terry)

Yeah, now
Stay with me, baby
Stay with me, baby
Stay with me, baby
I just can't go

Remember, you said you were always going to leave
Remember, said you were always going to leave
Remember, remember
I can't help but wanting you, loving you

Stay with me, baby
I want you to stay with me, baby
Come on please, stay with me, baby
All, all that I need, is getting in there
All I . . . Alright

Yeah, come on now
Stay with me, baby
Shake with me, baby
Stay with me, baby
All I need is take
Come on
Why won't you stay

I agree. I love the original version. Steve Marriott(Small Faces, Humble Pie) did a good version as well. But this is easily my favorite.

Timeless classic after over fifty years on. First heard this on Allison Steele’s night bird show on WHEW FM in NYC in 1970. A time, a place, many memories!

I bought this as a cut-out in 1970. I still haven't heard a more powerful voice.

I got the pleasure to spend 4-5 hours with this musician’s musician. On a hot July night in 1970 at Byron Georgia during the second Atlanta Pop Festival. While walking to the “Free Stage” from the main stage I found myself walking alongside him on a very narrow trail between a parking lot and a wooded area. He was headed to the free stage to perform. We made quick friends I think, because I recognized him and he hadn’t gained any popularity yet in America according to him. We talked for a very long time while someone else occupied the free stage. After he performed he found me and asked how I liked the show. I couldn’t believe I was spending time with someone that my band covered several of his songs and he actually wanted my opinion about his show. At times it was rather hard to understand him due to his heavy British accent and the way he worded sentences. I managed, and in all we probably spent 4-5 hours talking not including his show. I still can’t believe this happened. He was so down to earth and easy to get to know. I understand that he never really found the fame of a superstar but through the years I would hear famous musicians refer to his influence he had on their music and how they loved him. What a great night. Thank you Terry for your music and your time.

@Louis Howe yes it was hot. Fortunately my dad lived in Warner Robbins and everyone that I was friends with were welcome to hitch rides to and from his place for a couple of hours each day so that we could shower s and shave if we wanted. Not to mention raid the refrigerator. Then we thumbed it back to the Race Track for more of the show. It was a great never forgotten experience. But it was hot. Middle Georgia in July often was 110-115 in the hot part of the day, and 80-85 at night. I wish I could take my son’s back there for a day, wow what a day it would be.
