What Is and What Should Never Be
Reinhart Haley Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Take my hand, child, come with me
It's to a castle I will take you
Well what's to be, they say will be
[Chorus]
Catch the wind, see us spin, sail away, leave today, way up high in the sky
But the wind won't blow, I really shouldn't go, it only goes to show
And if you say to me tomorrow
Oh what fun it all would be
Then what's to stop us, pretty baby
But what is and what should never be
[Chorus]
So if you wake up with the sunrise
And all your dreams are still as new
And happiness is what you, you need so bad
Well girl, the answer lies with you
[Chorus]
Ooh, oh
Well, the wind wont blow and it really shouldn't go and it only goes to show
Catch the wind, we're gonna see it spin, we're gonna sail, little girl
Do do do, bop bop a do-oh
My my my my my my yeah
Everybody I know seems to know me well
But does anybody know I'm gonna move like hell
The lyrics to Reinhart Haley's song What Is and What Should Never Be, speaks about a potential romantic escapade between two people, where the singer invites the other person to come with them to a castle, but they are uncertain if they should go because the "wind won't blow." The chorus speaks of "catching the wind, seeing us spin, and sailing away way up high in the sky." However, the uncertainty of the situation is displayed when the singer confesses they really shouldn't go, as it only goes to show something about their future. They also comment on the idea that they will be together but only after they take their time, displaying that perhaps the relationship isn't meant to be rushed or forced, but needs to develop organically.
In the second verse, the other person speaks, saying that if they were to go, it would be fun, but they wonder what would stop them from going any further. They question the difference between what is and what should never be, which could mean they are evaluating the potential outcome of the relationship. The chorus repeats, emphasizing the desire to spin away and catch the wind, yet the uncertainty of the relationship is still prevalent, as the "wind won't blow."
The final verse is more introspective and speaks about waking up with new dreams and realizing that the answer to finding happiness may lie within the person. The song ends with the line, "Everybody I know seems to know me well, but does anybody know I'm gonna move like hell," which could mean that the singer is ready for change or a new journey in life. Overall, the song speaks about the potential for a romantic relationship while exploring uncertainty, contemplation, and ultimately, personal growth.

And if I say to you tomorrow
If I tell you that we should go somewhere tomorrow
Take my hand, child, come with me
Hold my hand and come along with me
It's to a castle I will take you
I will take you to a castle, a beautiful place
Well what's to be, they say will be
Whatever is bound to happen, will happen
Catch the wind, see us spin, sail away, leave today, way up high in the sky
Let's catch the wind, spin together and sail away up high in the sky, leaving behind everything today
But the wind won't blow, I really shouldn't go, it only goes to show that you will be mine, by takin' our time
But if the wind doesn't blow and it's not right to go, it only shows that we should take things slowly to be together
And if you say to me tomorrow, Oh what fun it all would be
If you tell me that it's going to be fun tomorrow
Then what's to stop us, pretty baby
There's nothing that should stop us, my dear
But what is and what should never be
But we should think about what is possible and what shouldn't happen
So if you wake up with the sunrise
If you wake up early in the morning
And all your dreams are still as new
And your dreams are still fresh
And happiness is what you, you need so bad
And you need happiness badly
Well girl, the answer lies with you
Then the answer to find it is within you, my girl
Well, the wind won't blow and it really shouldn't go and it only goes to show
Well, if the wind doesn't blow and it's not right to go, it only proves that
Catch the wind, we're gonna see it spin, we're gonna sail, little girl
Let's catch the wind and see it spin while we sail, little girl
Do do do, bop bop a do-oh
Nonsense words
My my my my my my yeah

Everybody I know seems to know me well
Everyone I know seems to understand me well

I've just read your altercation with oldascosmicdust. I'm glad it ended as gracefully as it did.
You do have to compare some aspects of performance. Some can be objectively regarded like pitch and voice control for instance but so much else can only be a purely subjective reaction. I thought Scotty and Lauren performed well in what they liked, and they both chose Country songs whenever they had the chance. Haley, by contrast, was far, far more versatile. I think she could easily have performed any of Scotty's and Lauren's songs very well. After all the House of the Rising Sun is in the Country repertoire, and she also did a cracking version of Blue.
On the other hand there's no way I could see Scotty or Lauren making any sort of job of LED Zeppelin, Michael Jackson or Gaga. And what about those duets with Casey? The others couldn't have lived with that.
I think that overall Haley is a hugely talented singer who goes far beyond what Scotty and Lauren could possibly do. That doesn't matter though. If you love the sort of things that Scotty and Lauren sing that's fine. They do it very well, and they both have good voices. I don't like the way people decry other performers that they see as rivals to their favourites. It's an attitude that spills over horribly into other walks of life. Demonise and de-humanise what you don't like. It ultimately leads to so much evil in the world that we are suffering from today.
Excuse me wandering into such unlikely territory, Shreya. I just get the feeling from your posts that you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

Thank you for putting this up. Astonishing choice of song for AI, both she & her dad nailed it, shame only that it was so short. Haley not winning was surely the end of this program .
Fun
Haley was easily the most talented contestant of American Idol in season 10 and obviously one of the best contestants of all time to have ever appeared on American Idol.

What bugged me the most about this season of Idol was that Haley was BY FAR the better singer of the remaining three contestants. She was a pure artist with an amazing range, style and stage presence. She was seasoned. But the Idol producers wanted a bonafide commercial star on their hands. Looking back on the most successful Idol winners they were Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, both very country at their roots. So Idol producers wanted to guarantee a country winner. Haley got the shaft, but she still wins on talent many years down the road.
