Hope
Rem Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You want to go out Friday
And you want to go forever.
You know that it sounds childish
That you've dreamt of alligators.
You hope that we are with you
And you hope you're recognized
You want to go forever
You see it in my eyes.
I'm lost in the confusion
And it doesn't seem to matter
You really can't believe it
And you hope it's getting better

You want to trust the doctors
Their procedure is the best
But the last try was a failure
And the intern was a mess.
And they did the same to Matthew
And he bled 'til Sunday night
They're saying don't be frightened
But you're weakened by the sight of it
You lock into a pattern
And you know that it's the last ditch
You're trying to see through it
And it doesn't make sense
But they're saying don't be frightened
And they're killing alligators
And they're hog-tied
And accepting of the struggle

You want to trust religion
And you know it's allegory
But the people who are followers
Have written their own story.
So you look up to the heavens
And you hope that it's a spaceship
And it's something from your childhood
You're thinking don't be frightened

You want to climb the ladder
You want to see forever
You want to go out Friday
And you want to go forever.
And you want to cross your DNA
To cross your DNA with something reptile.
And you're questioning the sciences
And questioning religion
You're looking like an idiot
And you no longer care.
And you want bridge the schism,
A built-in mechanism to protect you.
And you're looking for salvation
And you're looking for deliverance
You're looking for deliverance
You're looking like av idiot
And you no longer care.
You want to climb the ladder
You want to see forever.

You want to go out Friday
You want to go forever.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to REM's song "Hope" are a reflection of the human need for hope in the face of confusion, doubt, and uncertainty. The first verse describes a desire to escape mundane reality and the search for recognition and validation from others. The use of the metaphor of alligators suggests a fear of danger and the unknown.

The second verse shifts the focus to the medical profession and the failure of traditional treatments to cure illness. The reference to a bleeding patient named Matthew highlights the potential risks and uncertainties of medical procedures. Despite the lack of success, there is still a sense of hope in seeking treatment and trusting in doctors.

The third verse explores the idea of religion as a potential source of hope and salvation. However, the singer recognizes that religion is subjective and subject to individual interpretation. The image of a spaceship from childhood represents a nostalgic longing for a simpler time when hope was easier to find.

Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of desperation and confusion, but also a willingness to continue searching for hope and meaning in life.

Their best album

@fredh1720

Lol I think it's their worst. So many songs it's impossible to care about.

@matthewowen2182

@@fredh1720 I think you should revisit it, so many great songs, Falls to climb, Diminished, Parakeet, Walk Unafraid, sad Professor, Suspicion,etc the only the first 2 songs are weak

@potvin709

@@fredh1720 this comment makes no sense...there are only 2 more tracks than Automatic For the People (which you've got the artwork there for your pfp).

@_wormlet

@@potvin709 I don't agree with him, but his comment made perfect sense. He said that there are so many songs it's impossible to care about, i.e. there are a lot of songs he doesn't care about, despite his best efforts. I think you read it as him saying there were too many songs on the album.

@fredh1720

@@_wormlet You are correct. Although I would also say given there's only two here that are sub-four minutes, I also think that's too many songs in general. Not only does the whole thing overstay its welcome, but each song individually starts to feel like a slog.

@matthewowen2182 Personally I can't stand Sad Professor. I quite like the lyrics, but I don't like how they're delivered in that weird staccato style. I also think the instrumental just sounds like a demo version of Be Mine. I like all the other songs you mentioned (except Walk Unafraid, which is one of the weakest they ever did IMO), and I don't mind saying that I have warmed slightly to this album since buying the deluxe version. I still believe it's their worst, but there are moments of real beauty, even if the whole thing wasn't fully worked out.
