Nowadays
Renée Zellweger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

spoken:
Ladies and gentleman
Roxie Hart says goodbye

It's good, isn't it grand
Isn't it great, isn't it swell
Isn't it fun, isn't it nowadays
There's men everywhere
Jazz everywhere
Booze everywhere
Life everywhere
Joy everywhere
Nowadays

You can like the life your livin'

You can live the life you like
You can even marry Harry
But mess around with Ike

And that's good
Isn't it grand

Isn't it great
Isn't it swell
Isn't it fun
Isn't it
But nothin' stays

You can like the life your livin'
You can live the life you like
You can even marry Harry
But mess around with Ike

And that's good
Isn't it grand
Isn't it great
Isn't it swell...

spoken:
That's great. We'll be in touch...

Overall Meaning

The song Nowadays, performed by Renée Zellweger in the movie musical Chicago, is a commentary on the changing times and norms of the Jazz Age era in 1920s Chicago. The opening lines, spoken by the MC of the nightclub (played by Taye Diggs), signify the end of the performance of the character Roxie Hart (played by Zellweger) and also serve to introduce the theme of the song - the excitement and allure of the present moment.

The lyrics of the song emphasize the freedom and excess of the times, with references to men, jazz, booze, and joy being everywhere. The repetition of the line "you can like the life you're living, you can live the life you like" speaks to the power of personal choice and individuality, and the idea that people can make their own way in life without being bound by societal expectations.

However, the song also carries a warning about the transience of this free and easy lifestyle - the line "but nothing stays" serves as a reminder that the high of the present moment will eventually fade and that there will be consequences for any reckless behavior. The reference to marrying Harry but messing around with Ike represents the temptation to have it all and the risk of getting caught.

Overall, Nowadays is a celebratory yet cautionary commentary on the cultural and social changes of the 1920s, and the enduring allure of living in the moment.

Seems like she changed her eye lids and it's really changed her look dramatically. Too bad when people don't realize their unique looks are exactly what we love them for!!

A plastic surgeon said she lacked the double eyelid crease Caucasians are usually born with. So she either had surgery or used tape to hold them up. I think they got a bad reception from fans/public and she had them re-done or the aging process made them fall again.

Sqk

maybe she was just wearing eyelid tape
