Don Carlo is a greatly underrated and under-performed opera. Calls for a great soprano, TWO Great basses, a great baritone and a great mezzo who has 2 very diverse bravura arias... I love it and have gone to performances around the country when I could find it mounted. Expensive to mount because of the vocal demands plus a big chorus.

Tebaldi sings this aria beautifully, great interpretation. Her high notes are straight forward no wobbles a la Callas. It is too bad she never sang this opera on stage she will have been great.

Claude Michaud enough with the callas wobble... I love tebaldi...she tend to be flat on anything above a high b flat..(weird for a soprano) and her voice lacks squilo! I say that to say there no need to bring callas down because you like tebaldi!!! Just enjoy her without bringing Callas into the mix! Callas was absolute deserving of her title as la divina!

Claude Michaud callas only had those late in her career. And poor Tebaldi had glad notes AND a wobble when older. It happened as most singers had a shorter shelf life than now.

@Orion88 Tebaldi began her professional career in 1943, sang her last performance at the Met in 1973 and retired from singing in 1976.
Leontyne Price began her career in 1952, retired from the Met in 1985 and sang until, what? 1993 in recitals.
Nilsson débuted in 1947 - retired in 1982.
All of them, pretty long time on the shelf.
Not trying to be a snit but I am honestly curious as to what I am missing here.

All'ascolto la grande Tebaldi suggerisce pur sempre la sensazione di qualcosa che sgorga sorgiva in forza di un istinto altamente musicale, rifinita non di meno da invidiabile magistero. A ciò contribuisce determinante la dizione immancabilmente chiara, aristocratica, scolpita eppure mai martellata come quella delle cosiddette cantanti-attrici del suo tempo... Sapeva imporsi con decibel incredibili in chi, come lei, colloquiava con dolcezza a platee innamorate con inauditi pianissimi.

Of course Tebaldi is wonderful here because she was an outstanding soprano. If I had to choose a winner it would be Maria Callas but it doesn't really matter because either singer is infinitely better than any one we have today in Italian Opera. Italian opera is dead but we fortunately have excellent recordings from the golden age.

Segue per simisimi9: Nella Tebaldi, timbro di regale opulenza, estrema dignità di fraseggio, proverbiale fermezza dei suoni, ben mostrano l'ascendenza di un ruolo che fu appannaggio di Teresa Stolz. La successiva liricizzazione della parte, spesso portata all'estremo da voci non più che di lirico puro, fa torto alla scrittura verdiana che in origine assegnò ad Elisabetta accenti di maggiore autorità che non a Eboli. Anche qui, splendida, splendida Tebaldi. Che regine furono le "nostre" regine!

Voce di velluto, incomparabile nei suoi crescendo, eccelsa nella tonalità basse, un vero soprano lirico-spinto che non non ha ancora avuto eguali nel belcanto verista. Peccato che non abbia cantato in palcoscenico opere come Un Ballo in Maschera, Il Trovatore e il Don Carlos.

Straordinaria. Come padroneggia i bassi. La limpida bellezza della voce, la tecnica sopraffina, la potenza, la personalità. Non aveva niente da invidiare a nessuno, nemmeno alla Callas. Solo che la Callas ci faceva piangere, la Tebaldi no.

OK, non era mia intenzione "liquidare" un mostro sacro della lirica come la Callas con una battuta. Io sostengo che le due fossero equivalenti come tecnica, voce e personalità. La Callas però era superiore come qualità teatrali: la drammaticità delle sue interpretazioni rimane incomparabile. Come si dice, ad esempio per Tosca, la Tebaldi era grande ma rimaneva sempre la Tebaldi, la Callas invece diventava Tosca.

fabrizio maria Garzi assolutamente no,equivalenti no. Grandissima laTebaldi ,ma con dei limiti ,straordinaria nel canto di forza ,voce poco agile . La Callas ?.......qui si apre un mondo !! padronanza in ogni repertorio e registro vocale ,timbro sicuramente meno aureo di Tebaldi,ma di straordinaria caratura ,trovo che le imperfezioni del suo canto la rendessero ancora più unica . Poi il magnetismo ,il fascino ,il sovrumano che aveva nel catturate il pubblico estasiato e coinvolto fino a confondere in loro la realta dalla finzione ,due o tre ore di totale rapimento emotivo degli astanti,solo Maria era capace di crearlo. Interpretazione drammatica impareggiabile dal suono all'immagine ,non conosco nessun altra interprete capace di un tale sovrumano talento.

Callas and Scotto were great interpreters, but were vocally past their best when they recored this aria. Freni shows that a ligher voice can be effective. But only a voice with the range and size of Tebaldi's can reveal all that this aria has to offer.

ce ne fossero altre Tebaldi.... oggi sono quasi tutte " capre " , l'era d'oro dell'opera e dei grandi artisti e` finita. Io sono un callasiano sfegatato ma apprezzo anche la Tebaldi. E che dire di Suterland, Gancer, Caballe`, Leontyne Price eccetera, tempi d'oro ormai andati purtroppo !!!

Tebaldi enorme, voce splendida, interpretazione ad alti livelli. Ma non è il suo migliore "tu che le vanità". Questo è il suo primo approccio alla grande aria del Don Carlo. Le basterà cantarlo l'anno dopo, con Solti, nell'incisione Decca, per darne una lettura vocale e interpretativa perfetta. Qui a farla da padrona è soprattutto la voce il bisogno di confrontarsi con le grandi elisabette del passato che per la tebaldi erano cigna e caniglia è risolto dalla tebaldi con un suono sostenuto e aulico. L'anno dopo, con Solti, Elisabetta è messa perfettamente a fuoco: per esempio la frase iniziale "tu che le vanità conoscesti del mondo" è meno scandita e maggiormente fluida, dal momento che la Tebaldi e "il riposo profondo" è sempre squillante ma volutamente più leggero e sfumato. Entrambe le incisioni sono la testimonianza di un magistero artistico sommo, ma preferisco la seconda.

Sorry opera hags, but Freni was the better of the two divas in tis role. I love them both, but their techniques were bound to their personalities. Freni was the more versatile and more complete reader of so complex a character.

Not as bad as the Solti version but what a pity a such voice couldn't put more nobility in her singing. And as often, some end of phrases or tense passages are a litle bit off pitch. A tiny too low.

How the real beaty of the voice could mask that, since the end of the 50's to the end of her career, she sang so often low in the high medium (especialy when she tries to sing piano) and that almost all the high notes (from about G or A) were screemed. Big, huge sream, but scream. A mystery...

But the low notes are impressives (even not very classy) and some dynamic variations show the artitry.
