The most iconic song to many French people, and possibly the song that put him on the map, was the huge 70's French hit "Laisse Béton" (the story - told with a great deal of humour - of someone who enters a bar and gets mugged for everything he owns, from his leather jacket, to his jeans, his boots, and ends up in an alley without any clothes on).
Renaud 'came back' in 2002 with a huge hit 'Manhattan-Kaboul' (featuring Belgian singer Axelle Red), comparing the lives of a Puerto Rican in NYC to an Afghan girl in Kabul in 2001. This song catapulted his latest album to the top of the charts and earned him various awards in France. His latest album was published in october 2006 and was called "Rouge sang".

J'pourrais presque me passer d'mes potes
Mais pas de toi
J'pourrais presque me passer d'mes clopes
Mais pas de toi
Mais pas de toi
Mais pas de toi
The lyrics to Renaud's song "Arrêter la clope!" (Stop smoking!) speak to the struggle of quitting smoking, and the frustration that can come with trying to do so. The first verse acknowledges that it's not easy to quit, and that it takes a great deal of willpower and determination. The second verse paints a picture of just how much the singer has been smoking (60 cigarettes a day for 40 years), and the financial toll it has taken on him. He also mentions the dealers who have profited off his addiction, and the fact that he's ready to quit before smoking stops his life altogether. He encourages the listener to quit as well, especially when he sees young kids already smoking. The lyrics speak out against the tobacco industry and make clear the singer doesn't want to die or live a life without his partner, but acknowledges how difficult the habit can be to kick.
The song was released on Renaud's 2006 album "Rouge Sang" and has resonated with millions of smokers around the world. It speaks to the frustration and difficulty of quitting smoking, as well as the many reasons why someone might want to quit. Interestingly, Renaud was a heavy smoker at the time of its release and has since become abstinent from cigarettes. The song has become a rallying cry for those who want to quit smoking, and it continues to inspire others to kick the habit for good.
