The song "Brave Margot" by Renaud tells a story of a young shepherdess named Margoton who finds a small kitten in the grass that had lost its mother. She takes the kitten in and puts it close to her chest, becoming a surrogate mother to the kitten. The scene is spotted by a passing farmer who spreads the word about the situation to everyone he comes across. The next day, when Margoton was feeding the kitten, all the men in the village were present and watching her, including the school teacher, the mayor, the sexton, and the postal worker. Even the choirboys stopped singing during Mass to come and watch.
Margoton, who was very innocent and naive, saw nothing wrong with the situation and thought all the men had come to see her cat. But the other women of the village were jealous of Margoton's newfound attention and they began to resent her. Eventually, the women took their anger out on the kitten, killing it with sticks. Margoton was heartbroken and ended up getting married to try to forget the incident. The song ends with an epilogue, where the memory of the event is confined to only the older generation who tell their grandchildren about the shepherdess who became famous because of her cat.
The lyrics of "Brave Margot" criticize the villagers for their hypocrisy and their willingness to gossip but also shows how a simple and innocent act of kindness can turn into a scandalous event.
