The most iconic song to many French people, and possibly the song that put him on the map, was the huge 70's French hit "Laisse Béton" (the story - told with a great deal of humour - of someone who enters a bar and gets mugged for everything he owns, from his leather jacket, to his jeans, his boots, and ends up in an alley without any clothes on).
Renaud 'came back' in 2002 with a huge hit 'Manhattan-Kaboul' (featuring Belgian singer Axelle Red), comparing the lives of a Puerto Rican in NYC to an Afghan girl in Kabul in 2001. This song catapulted his latest album to the top of the charts and earned him various awards in France. His latest album was published in october 2006 and was called "Rouge sang".
C'est quand qu'on va où ?

"Je n'dois pas parler en classe"
Ras l'bol de la discipline!
Y'en a marre, c'est digoulasse!
C'est même pas moi qui parlais,
Moi j'répondais à Arthur
Qui me demandait, en anglais,
Comment s'écrit No Future
Si on est puni pour ça
Alors j'dis "Halte à tout!"
Explique-moi, Papa,
C'est quand qu'on va où?
C'est quand même un peu galère
D'aller chaque jour au chagrin
Quand t'as tellement d'gens sur Terre
Qui vont pointer chez fout-rien
'Vec les devoirs à la maison
J'fais ma semaine de soixante heures,
Non seulement pour pas un rond,
Mais en plus pour finir chômeur!
Veulent me gaver comme une oie
Avec des matières indigestes,
J'aurai oublié tout ça
Quand j'aurai appris tout l'reste,
Soulève un peu mon cartable,
L'est lourd comme un cheval mort,
Dix kilos d'indispensables
Théorèmes de Pythagore!
Si j'dois m'avaler tout ça
Alors j'dis "Halte à tout!"
Explique-moi, Papa
Explique-moi, Papa
C'est quand qu'on va où?
Quand j'serai grande j'veux être heureuse,
Savoir dessiner un peu,
Savoir m'servir d'une perceuse,
Savoir allumer un feu,
Jouer peut-être du violoncelle,
Avoir une belle écriture,
Pour écrire des mots rebelles
À faire tomber tous les murs!
Si l'école permet pas ça
Alors j'dis "Halte à tout!"
Explique-moi, Papa
Explique-moi, Papa
C'est quand qu'on va où?
In Renaud's song "C'est quand qu'on va où?" we can see a teenager's frustration with the rigid discipline of school, and the feeling of being overloaded with information that is completely irrelevant to their lives. The singer has been given 500 lines to repeat as punishment for talking in class, while they were only trying to help a friend with a question about English. The first verse also highlights the confusion between what is deemed important by the education system versus what is truly meaningful in life. The singer laments the fact that they are being forced to memorize complex math theorems while being given no education on how to navigate and understand the complexities of human relationships.
The second verse focuses on the weight of schoolwork and the fact that students are expected to work full-time hours on top of their regular school hours, only to finish education that may well lead them to a future of unemployment. The singer has also noticed that they are being taught information that is irrelevant, boring and will not help them in the future - and they've had enough! They want an education that will prepare them to live life meaningfully and passionately, with a focus on what really matters.
Renaud's "C'est quand qu'on va où?" is a satirical commentary on the education system, but it is also a hopeful call for change. The lyrics encourage us to question the status quo and to demand an education that is meaningful and relevant. And, while these themes may be universal, they have a particularly French flavour to them – the notion of the "rebel" permeates this song and is a characteristic that is particularly French, as French identity has often been associated with a healthy dose of rebelliousness.

Les hommes libres et égaux,
Men free and equal,
L'gouvernement décid'rait
The government would decide
Qu'c'est pas bon pour les marmots!
That it's not good for the little ones!

Merci.
