The most iconic song to many French people, and possibly the song that put him on the map, was the huge 70's French hit "Laisse Béton" (the story - told with a great deal of humour - of someone who enters a bar and gets mugged for everything he owns, from his leather jacket, to his jeans, his boots, and ends up in an alley without any clothes on).
Renaud 'came back' in 2002 with a huge hit 'Manhattan-Kaboul' (featuring Belgian singer Axelle Red), comparing the lives of a Puerto Rican in NYC to an Afghan girl in Kabul in 2001. This song catapulted his latest album to the top of the charts and earned him various awards in France. His latest album was published in october 2006 and was called "Rouge sang".

Une chambre de bonne
Quelque part dans le cinquième
À coté de la Sorbonne
Les WC sur le pallier
Une fenêtre sur la cour
En haut d'un escalier
Qu'avait jamais vu le jour
De ce pauvre boui-boui
Y avait Che Guevara
Les Pink Floyd et Johnny
Sur le vieille électrophone
Trop souvent détraqué
Elle écoutait les Stones
Et Maxime le Forestier
Germaine, Germaine
Une java ou un tango
C'est du pareil au même
Pour te dire que je t'aime
Qu'importe le tempo
Germaine, Germaine
Un rock 'n' roll ou un slow
C'est du pareil au même
Pour te dire que je t'aime
Et que je t'ai dans la peau
Ça sentait bon chez elle
L'herbe et le patchouli
Le parfum des poubelles
Au petit matin gris
On buvait de la bière
Et du thé au jasmin
Assis en rond par-terre
Sur un tapis indien
Les voisins du dessous
Étaient bien sympathiques
Quand on faisait trop les fous
Ils se plaignaient qu'aux flics
Enfin bref chez Germaine
C'était vraiment Byzance
Tous les jours de la semaine
On était en vacances
Germaine, Germaine
Une java ou un tango
C'est du pareil au même
Pour te dire que je t'aime
Qu'importe le tempo (oh oh)
Germaine, Germaine
Un rock 'n' roll ou un slow
C'est du pareil au même
Pour te dire que je t'aime
Et que je t'ai dans la peau (poil au dos)
Mais quand elle est partie
Un jour pour Katmandou
Moi je vous jure les amis
Ça m'a fichu un coup
Sur la place Saint Michel
Où elle traînait parfois
On parle encore d'elle
Des sanglots dans la voix
Moi j'ai repris sa piaule
Mais c'est plus comme avant
C'est même plus vraiment drôle
Elle me manque souvent
Mais son électrophone
Elle me l'a laissée
Comme ses disques des Stones
Et de Maxime le Forestier
Germaine, Germaine
Une java ou un tango
C'est du pareil au même
Pour te dire que je t'aime
Et que j'aime la Kanterbraü (oh-oh)
Germaine, Germaine
Un rock 'n' roll ou un slow
C'est du pareil au même
Pour te dire que je t'aime
Et que je t'ai dans la peau!
The song Germaine by Renaud tells the story of a woman named Germaine who lives in a small, shabby apartment in the fifth arrondissement of Paris next to the Sorbonne. Germaine's apartment has a communal bathroom and a view of the courtyard. The walls of the apartment are covered with posters of Che Guevara, the Pink Floyd, and Johnny Hallyday, and Germaine listens to the Rolling Stones and Maxime Le Forestier on an old, malfunctioning record player.
Despite the humble conditions of her living space, Germaine's apartment is a haven for her and her friends. They drink beer and jasmine tea while sitting on an Indian rug on the floor. Germaine's neighbors below are friendly, but they complain to the police when the group gets too rowdy. Renaud sings nostalgically about their carefree days and nights, but the mood changes when Germaine leaves for Katmandu, and Renaud takes over her apartment. Although he has access to Germaine's record collection and her beloved record player, it's not the same without her.
