The most iconic song to many French people, and possibly the song that put him on the map, was the huge 70's French hit "Laisse Béton" (the story - told with a great deal of humour - of someone who enters a bar and gets mugged for everything he owns, from his leather jacket, to his jeans, his boots, and ends up in an alley without any clothes on).
Renaud 'came back' in 2002 with a huge hit 'Manhattan-Kaboul' (featuring Belgian singer Axelle Red), comparing the lives of a Puerto Rican in NYC to an Afghan girl in Kabul in 2001. This song catapulted his latest album to the top of the charts and earned him various awards in France. His latest album was published in october 2006 and was called "Rouge sang".

Y s'baladait peinard
Il avait pas d'collier
Il était libre d'aller
Et d'rev'nir pour bouffer
Il était même pas prisonnier
De ton amour insensé
Voulu qu'y vive comme un con
Sur le canapé
Loin des gouttières des pigeons
C'était un aventurier
T'aurais pas voulu qu'on l'attache
Y t'aurais miaulé: « Mort aux vaches! »
On l'enterr'ra demain j'te jure
A cause qu’on s'demande bien pourquoi
The song Le Petit Chat Est Mort by Renaud tells the story of a cat who has been killed after falling off a roof. The lyrics address the cat's death, but also the relationship between the cat and its owner. The first verse implies that the cat was free to come and go as it pleased, and that the owner did not want to restrict its freedom by putting a collar on it. The owner also did not want to keep the cat inside like a prisoner, trapped by the owner's love. The owner seems to understand that the cat needed adventure and the freedom to be a cat.
The second verse addresses the irony of the cat's death. The owner seems to suggest that it's unfair that it's always cats who fall off roofs and die, rather than humans. The owner notes that the cat was a true adventurer, not one to be tamed or domesticated. The cat was a "sac à puces," which is a term of endearment for a cat that means "bag of fleas." The cat is described as being more free than a dog, and even more of a rebel. The verse ends with the suggestion that freedom, while desirable, is not without risk.
The chorus of the song is a simple repetition of the fact that the cat has died, and that it will be buried in a shoebox. The final verse implies that the cat will be buried in a special spot, perhaps a garden, where it will be at one with nature. The verse ends with the suggestion that maybe humans should be more cautious and not get too close to the sky.

"Le petit chat est mort
Il est tombé du toit
A cause de moi
A cause de mon amour insensé
Qui le rendait prisonnier
Il a sauté du toit
Et patatra
Y a plus de p'tit chat
Et moi, j'm'en mors les doigts"
....
