Les cinq sens
Renaud Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

À part Brassens et les oiseaux
Quoi écouter ?
L'eau qui rigole au caniveau
De mon quartier
Le vent qui vient tirer des plaintes
Aux peupliers
Et toujours la folle complainte
De Charles Trenet…

A part à ta peau de sirène
A quoi toucher ?
A l'outil taillé dans le chêne
Ou l'olivier
Au crayon que l'enfant promène
Sur un cahier
Aux touches d'ivoire et d'ébène
D'un vieux clavier

A part à tes fruits défendus
A quoi goûter ?
A l'impossible à l'imprévu

Quoi regarder ?
La rivière au bord de l'eau
Au mois de mai
L'enfant qui joue du violon
Les Pyrénées
Ton joli cul tes seins bien ronds
Tes yeux fermés

A part les coquelicots de juin
Quoi respirer ?
Qu'on a tire,
A la santé d'un bon copain
A l'amitié
A l'amour que j'ai dans les mains
Que tu m'as donné

Que tu m'as donné

(Merci à Jacques pour cettes paroles)

Overall Meaning

In "Les cinq sens," Renaud sings about the different senses that he uses to experience and appreciate the world around him. He begins by acknowledging the great French chanson singer Georges Brassens and the birds as sources of musical inspiration. Then he talks about what to listen to: the sound of water trickling down the gutter in his neighborhood, the wind that makes the poplars groan, and always the wild lament of Charles Trenet.

Next, the song turns to the tactile sense, and Renaud wonders what to feel besides the smooth skin of his beloved. He suggests touching tools made of oak or olive wood, the pencil a child scribbles with, or the ivory and ebony keys of an old keyboard. After that, Renaud considers what to taste besides his lover's forbidden fruit. He proposes sampling the impossible, the unpredictable, and the dangerous, as well as sipping a good glass of red wine and kissing his lover's lips.

Moving on to sight, Renaud asks what to look at besides Robert Doisneau's photographs. He suggests watching a river in May, a child playing the violin, the Pyrenees mountains, and his lover's buttocks, breasts, and closed eyes. Finally, Renaud wonders what to smell besides the poppies of June. He suggests inhaling the bread and wine shared with friends and toasting to good health, friendship, and the love that he holds in his hands, which his lover has given him.

Overall, the song is a celebration of the different ways that we can use our senses to appreciate life and love.
