The most iconic song to many French people, and possibly the song that put him on the map, was the huge 70's French hit "Laisse Béton" (the story - told with a great deal of humour - of someone who enters a bar and gets mugged for everything he owns, from his leather jacket, to his jeans, his boots, and ends up in an alley without any clothes on).
Renaud 'came back' in 2002 with a huge hit 'Manhattan-Kaboul' (featuring Belgian singer Axelle Red), comparing the lives of a Puerto Rican in NYC to an Afghan girl in Kabul in 2001. This song catapulted his latest album to the top of the charts and earned him various awards in France. His latest album was published in october 2006 and was called "Rouge sang".

Est sorti d'son bus Volkswagen
Qu'il avait garé comme une loque
Devant mon rad'
J'ai dit à Bob qu'était au flip
Viens voir le mariole qui s'ramène
Vise la dégaine, quelle rigolade
Patchouli pataugeasses
Pis t'as rien à foutre dans mon monde
Arrache-toi d'là, t'es pas d'ma bande
Casse-toi, tu pues
Pis t'as rien à foutre dans mon monde
Arrache-toi d'là, t'es pas d'ma bande
Casse-toi, tu pues
Pis t'as rien à foutre dans mon monde
Arrache-toi d'là, t'es pas d'ma bande
Casse-toi, tu pues
Quand Bob a massacré l'flipper
Et j'me suis dit
Si la mort me paye l'apéro
Pis t'as rien à foutre dans mon monde
Arrache-toi d'là, t'es pas d'ma bande
Casse-toi, tu pues
Et marche à l'ombre
Casse-toi, tu pues
Et marche à l'ombre
Casse-toi, tu pues
Et marche à l'ombre
Renaud’s “Marche A L'Ombre” is a song that embodies the French punk spirit. The lyrics contain a series of vignettes featuring different types of people that the singer doesn't want in his world. The story unfolds in urban, lower-class settings, where the singer comes across different characters, and uses humor and sarcasm to dismiss them.
The song begins with a description of a filthy hippie that the singer encounters outside his apartment. The hippie is wearing a "Guide Du Routard" travel guide, carrying a drum, and reeking of patchouli. The singer dismisses him, telling him he doesn't belong, and should "marche a l'ombre" (walk in the shade). The song then proceeds to different characters, including a snobbish woman, a punk, and an intellectual type that the singer mocks in his lyrics.
The repetitive chorus of "Casse toi tu pues et marche à l'ombre" (Get lost, you stink and walk in the shade) and the chugging guitar riff create a catchy and memorable song that has become a classic among Renaud’s fans in particular and punk music lovers in general. The song is an indictment of society and its outsiders, whose smell, behavior, and status do not fit with the singer's vision of the world. The song's rhythm and lyrics also mirror Renaud's social and political stance as a leftist who has always been committed to speaking against authority and injustice.
