How Do You Sleep?
Replicants Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So Sgt. Pepper took you
By surprise
You better see right through that
Mother's eyes
Those freaks was right when they said
You was dead
The one mistake you made was
In your head
Oh
How do you sleep?
Oh
How do you sleep?
You live with straights who tell you
You was king
Jump when your mamma tell you
Anything
The only thing you've done was
Yesterday
And since you're gone you're just
Another day
Oh
How do you sleep?
Oh
How do you sleep?
Oh
How do you sleep?
Oh
How do you sleep?
Sleep at night
A pretty face may last one
Year or two
But pretty soon they'll see what
You can do
The sound you make is music
To my ears
You must have learnt something
All those years
Oh
How do you sleep?
Oh

How do you sleep?
Sleep at night

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Replicants' "How Do You Sleep?" are a scathing criticism of Paul McCartney and his "perfect" image in the public eye. The song was written by John Lennon in response to McCartney's perceived betrayal of the Beatles' ideals and his own ego-driven control of the band. The opening lines refer to the Beatles' 1967 album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," which Lennon sees as a calculated marketing ploy rather than an artistic statement. He accuses McCartney of being a sell-out who has bought into his own hype and become disconnected from reality.

The song then goes on to attack McCartney's "straight" lifestyle, contrasting it with Lennon's own countercultural values. He accuses McCartney of being controlled by his mother and living a life of luxury without any real substance. The only thing McCartney has done of note, according to Lennon, is write the song "Yesterday." The chorus repeats the question "How do you sleep?" with an accusatory tone, implying that McCartney's actions have betrayed their friendship and the ideals they once shared.

Overall, "How Do You Sleep?" is a bitter and personal attack on Paul McCartney, reflecting the deep rift between the former bandmates.

This is such a fantastic cover. Shame none of the streaming services feature this album.

@Eatwithureyes

I bought this album in the mid 90's it's still sounds good as of late. This song in particular was a favorite of a couple of old hippies i worked with they turned me on to a lot of good " out there literature " and diverse opinions on everything.
I stiil talk them to this day.

@ajaxStardust

The Band's name comes from a Phillip K Dick novel. "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", or the film interpretation... Blade Runner.

@scottstephens6008

Phil Dick lol

@gimmedataids

Fitting that they covered "Are Friends Electric?"

@zardozmania

This Lennon song is 'coded' he's talking about McCartney being dead, having died early on and having been replaced by a double. He couldn't just come right out and say it....Ringo's been trying to say it for years...

@MrBillybonkers

Interestingly, the replacement was even more talented and a better songwriter than the original. What are the chances, eh?

@funklover247

simply awesome

@laurabeth4798
