Reprazent Lyrics

i dont' know no hero
they can get the glory
the can get the glory
and then they kiss you and tell you that they're satisfied

oh oh save me a hero

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Reprazent/Roni Size's song Heroes suggest a jarring skepticism towards the concept of heroism. The opening line of "I don't know no hero" immediately rejects the idea of heroism as something unfathomable to the singer. The following line, "they can get the glory," acknowledges the hero narrative that inevitably follows stories of grandiose acts. However, the line that follows, "and then they kiss you and tell you that they're satisfied," unveils the insincerity of heroic acts. The idea being that heroes may perform these grand acts to satisfy their own egos, rather than for the good of the society.

The repetition of the line "oh oh save me a hero" reflects an underlying desperation for the singer to believe in heroism, despite their awareness of its flaws. It could also indicate that the societal expectations for heroism are ultimately unrealistic and impossible to fulfill. The song puts forth the notion that people should not rely too much on the deeds of what they perceive to be heroes, but make an effort to recognize the good that can be done on a personal level, rather than relying on one person to be a savior.

One of my stand-out Glastonbury moments ever was in 2000 watching Roni Size perform this, with Onallee's voice haunting across the crowd. Still sends shivers even 20+ ytears later.

I've always alled Roni Size's music "patient drum and bass". It's never in a rush to go where it goes, it just flows niiiiicely and shows its musical progression on a near-intuitive level.
