For Who You Are
Res Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Are you for real?
Are you for real?

Hey you, are you feeling like me too?
I need to get an answer out of you, well
All the days
All the time
All the lies lie on the line
Did you just try to set me off? well

Yeah ya know I'm easy
And I know it's true
That this situation
Isn't so easy on you

'Cause I
I need to know what you want, I
I wonder how you feel, and I
I need to know what you want
I can not guess anymore
Are you for real?
Are you for real?

Hey you, Is there truth behind your lies?
Is all this love
Or is it compromise? well
All the days
All the time
No regrets you're on my mind
Did you just try to set me off? well

Yeah this awkward silence
Feels so cold and used
Is this infatuation
Or am I addicted to you?

'Cause I
I need to know what you want, I
I wonder how you feel, and I
I need to know what you want
I can not guess anymore
Are you for real?

Re-re-re-reverse the beat
Back up direction
Tries and trust and planned out deception
The look in your eyes
Verbal dissection
Lose myself in you
And then sex then rejection
Self destruct in you arms
As your words stacks kill
Are you for real?
Are you for real?
Are you for real?

Hey you, are you feeling lonely too?
I need to get some answers, some answers

'Cause I
I need to know what you want, I
I wonder how you feel, and I
I need to know what you want
I can not guess anymore
'Cause I
I need to know what you want, I
I wonder how you feel, and I
I need to know what you want
I can not guess anymore
Are you for real?

Overall Meaning

Res's song "For Who You Are" is a contemplative, introspective piece that seeks to have a better understanding of the person she is interacting with. The lyrics throughout the song convey a feeling of uncertainty and confusion. The track opens with the repetition of “Are you for real?” question, which appears again and again, making it clear that Res is craving an honest and open conversation from her partner.

The song's opening verse sets up the theme of disillusionment, or even betrayal, as she mentions "All the lies lie on the line" and "Did you just try to set me off?" It is clear she's been through some dishonesty before and is requesting an explanation from the other person. She then questions "Is there truth behind your lies?" indicating that she's struggling to know the distinction between truth and deception in their relationship. The lyrics "No regrets, you're on my mind" suggest that Res still has feelings for the person she's singing to, despite the confusion, disappointment, and frustration.

In the second verse, Res reflects on the non-verbal cues that take place between her and her partner. She mentions that their silences feel "cold and used," suggesting that they've become too familiar with it. Similarly, the line "Verbal dissection," implies a dissecting act or possible deception in their verbal interactions that she can't seem to make out or understand. The final verse begins with Res wondering if her connection with her partner is pure love or simply a compromise. She then ends with questioning if they are even real or if she's just addicted to a certain feeling.

Overall, "For Who You Are" is a plea for the truth and a call for clarity amidst confusion in a relationship. The song is a mix of vulnerable and searching words, along with lush, laid-back production.

Verse 1]
You were my lover
Used to be one of my best friends
Someone I really loved to talk to
When my day was comin' to it's end
But

[Pre-Chorus]
(People come and then they go)
I know we had to grow apart
(I wish you woulda told me before)
But I never knew things would get so hard
(Cause since it wasn't meant to be)
And I will always love you
For who you are

[Chorus] (x2)
See, I don't blame you for running
I never seen the dark places you've been
So please can you tell me something?
Like what it'll take to make it ours again, again

[Verse 2]
Everybody knows that I'm right
But I hate myself for not lettin' go and
For putting up such an emotional fight
That leads to rejection, then suppression
Then mistaking, conversation
Oh man I'm so tired, I've been so tried
And to make things work
I pull it all inside

@Emmanuel Butler. Just moved to Chicago from Arkansas and this was the first song I heard that blew me away. My aunties and uncles moved to Chicago in the 40's-early '70s and this stepping music has made it to the club my uncle nem own in Arkansas. This is the last song he plays at the end of the night and man the Chi-town people go crazy when this is played. Hell, we moved to the Chi and now they're moving back to Arkansas.
