Do You Have a Gun?
Revolver Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Have you seen that girl
The other night at the club ?
She was wearing black like the other year

As a bird she came
couldn't forget her name
J-U-L-I-A used to hate cocaine
Then we're in a bar
We couldn't get too far
Dead drunk with happiness too much to drive my car

Do You Have A Gun ?
Something must be done
Six holes and a bullet would be such fun

It's been half a day
Since I know she's in grey
It's been half a day I still wanna play

Now she says she hates me

As much as everybody
Now she says she hates me and comes over me

I remember the bar

We couldn't get too far
Dead drunk with happiness too much to drive my car

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Revolver's song "Do You Have a Gun?" paint a picture of a wild night out at a club, with the singer discussing an intriguing girl named Julia. She's described as wearing black and having a bird-like presence, and she's apparently someone the singer couldn't forget ("J-U-L-I-A used to hate cocaine"). The night progresses to a bar where everyone is "dead drunk with happiness", making it impossible for the singer to drive. Then, in a jarring turn, the song takes a dark and violent turn with the line "Do You Have A Gun? Something must be done/Six holes and a bullet would be such fun."

From there, the song becomes increasingly ominous, with the singer unable to move on from his obsession with Julia even though she now "hates me as much as everybody." The refrain of "Do You Have A Gun?" is repeated, and it never becomes clear whether the singer is planning to harm Julia or himself. The overall tone of the song is one of confusion, desperation, and perhaps even madness.

It's worth noting that the song's lyrics are somewhat abstract and open to interpretation, as is often the case with Revolver's work. However, the themes of obsession, addiction, and violence are certainly present, and the song raises some uncomfortable questions about what can happen when someone becomes fixated on someone else.
