A Hymn To Him
Rex Harrison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What in all of heaven couldโ€ฒve prompted her to go
After such a triumph as the ball?
What could've depressed her?
What couldโ€ฒve possessed her?
I cannot understand the wretch at all!

Women are irrational, that's all there is to that
Their heads are full of cotton, hay, and rags
They're nothing but exasperating, irritating
Vacillating, calculating, agitating
Maddening and infuriating hags!

Pickering, why canโ€ฒt a woman be more like a man?
Hmm?
Yes...
Why canโ€ฒt a woman be more like a man?
Men are so honest, so thoroughly square
Eternally noble, historically fair
Who, when you win, will always give your back a pat
Why can't a woman be like that?

Why does everyone do what the others do?
Canโ€ฒt a woman learn to use her head?
Why do they do everything their mothers do?
Why don't they grow up like their father instead?

Why canโ€ฒt a woman take after a man?
Men are so pleasant, so easy to please
Whenever you're with them, youโ€ฒre always at ease

Would you be slighted if I didn't speak for hours?
Of course not!
Would you be livid if I had a drink or two?
Nonsense!
Would you be wounded if I never sent you flowers?
Never!
Well, why can't a woman be like you?

One man in a million may shout a bit
Now and then, thereโ€ฒs one with slight defects
One, perhaps, whose truthfulness you doubt a bit
But by and large we are a marvelous sex!

Why canโ€ฒt a woman behave like a man?
Men are so friendly, good natured and kind
A better companion you never will find

If I were hours late for dinner, would you bellow?
Of course not!
If I forgot your silly birthday, would you fuss?
Nonsense!
Would you complain if I took out another fellow?!
Never!
Well, why can't a woman be like us?!

Mrs. Pearce, youโ€ฒre a woman...
Why can't a woman be more like a man?
Men are so decent, such regular chaps
Ready to help you through any mishaps
Ready to buck you up whenever you are glum
Why canโ€ฒt a woman be a chum?

Why is thinking something women never do?
Why is logic never even tried?
Straightening up their hair is all they ever do
Why don't they straighten up the mess thatโ€ฒs inside?

Why can't a woman be more like a man?
If I was a woman who'd been to a ball,
Been hailed as a princess by one and by all
Would I start weeping like a bathtub overflowing?
And carry on as if my home were in a tree?

Would I run off and never tell me where Iโ€ฒm going?
Why canโ€ฒt a woman be like me?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rex Harrison's song A Hymn to Him from the musical My Fair Lady describe a frustration with women and their illogical behavior. Harrison's character, Professor Henry Higgins, cannot understand why Eliza, who had just achieved such success at a ball, would be upset and leave abruptly. He attributes this behavior to the irrationality of women, and declares that they are "nothing but exasperating, irritating, vacillating, calculating, agitating, maddening and infuriating hags!" He then goes on to compare women to men, insisting that if women were more like men, life would be easier and more pleasant. His complaints range from wanting women to be logical and use their heads more, to wishing they had the same level of honesty and reliability as men.

This song is an example of the misogyny prevalent in the time period (the 1910s-20s) in which My Fair Lady is set (and was written). However, it is also a commentary on the social and gender roles of the time, particularly the idea that women were meant to be emotional and irrational, while men were meant to be logical and practical. The song is meant to be humorous and satirical, but it also reflects some deeper societal issues.

I love that even then there was a subtle social awareness. This is facetious

Michael Shanks

"Mrs. Pearce, you're a woman..." adds so much to this. One of the best (non-Hepburn) scenes in the whole movie.

Mark Wicker

Possibly the greatest song ever written.

(That's a joke, but it is a great song).

And, yes, the song is truer than many are willing to admit.

Henry Higgins is right and Joel Higgins proved it as the father on SILVER SPOONS.
